This will be the only handgun I will currently own, I will not be carrying concealed on an everyday basis. But want that option to be available without too much bulk, want a good shooter, with a high capacity mag available 13+, I want a safety and a trigger safety but that's not a deal breaker. Going to go with a 9mm caliber. I want a compact or close to a compact

I like the Ruger SR9C a lot , like the SA 9mmXDM 3.8 , I really like the sig m-11a1 (p228) but it's out of the price range.(should I save the $ for it?)

What are the OB thoughts?

The M & P has no manual safety, it's a DA trigger only. At least the one I looked at, unless I'm mistaken

Why do you want a manual safety?

I would feel more comfortable with it while carrying and I just like the idea of having one.

This is the exact reason why I got one with a safety. I grew up shooting shotguns, and it just didn't seem right to not have a safety. Now that I'm comfortable with handguns, it doesn't really matter to me.

They make M&P's with a manual safety now.

In that price range just pick what feels and works best for you. Really can't go wrong with whatever you purchase as long as you don't go too cheap.

Just looked at the site, you can also get an extended grip magazine For a 17-1 capacity. These features are what originally lead me to liking the Ruger SR9c, can carry with standard mag and range/fun shoot with the extended mag.

The M & P I held the other day felt nice in hand and the trigger was nice.

LouisianaChessie has a couple extended mags for his M&P and they're awesome for the range. I think most would regard the M&P as a better weapon than the ruger, but I'm not exactly a handgun expert quite yet. I love my M&P and my next gun will be the shield. Can't really go wrong with the choices you named, but I would give the M&P a look before you decide.

If you like the sr9 then get it. It's a nice little gun.

Like everybody else said, you can't really go wrong on the upper end of your price range. I'm a M&P shield fan, but all of the $500+ guns are good

Yeti, thanks, I had ruled out the m&p b/c of the safety, was told they didn't come with them, probably wanted to sell me the one in stock. Really liked the feel better than the Ruger. Now I got to find one, LOL

Good luck in your search. Shouldn't be too hard to find

Glock 19, perfect size. You don't need an external safety.

May not "need" one but it's a feature I want.

M&P
Glock 19
Ruger SR series
Walther PPQ

All of these are great guns that will leave you with a couple hundred bucks left for ammo. If you absolutely have to have a safety, you can go for the M&P or Ruger.

If you really want the Sig P228, then go for it. The Sig Sauer P Series are awesome, battle-proven handguns...that do not have manual safeties.
