Baylor, whose coaches coined the nickname "RC2," was the first to offer, followed by hometown UNLV, Mississippi State and Syracuse. UCLA, Oregon and LSU are also showing interest in the 6-foot-5, 175-pound quarterback.
quote:
He's run a laser-timed 4.6-second 40-yard dash and last August cleared a meet-record 7 feet, 2 inches in the high jump at the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals in Humble, Texas. Cunningham wants to top the all-time national high school mark of 7-5.75. He wants to compete in track and play football in college. He wants to jump in the Olympics and follow his father to the NFL.
quote:
In his backup role, Cunningham completed 21 of 32 passes for 298 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions last season. He rushed 42 times for 483 yards and seven scores.

Bishop Gorman is a perennial power in Nevada FWIW. Pretty tough to crack the starting lineup as an underclassman.

If he wants to come to LSU as a 6'5" receiver, I'm good with that.

Bishop Gorman 's QB last season was the #1 ranked player in the state. 4 star and ranked #99 in the country

We could always use another punter.

Would the conversation be the same if this was Terry Bradshaw's or Steve Young's son, everything else being the same? Wide receiver or some other position other then QB?

Cunningham will be a 4* coming out

Nothing wrong with a wait and see approach. If he's good enough to be offered as a QB, he will be. If not, he's athletic as heck and will be offered as a wideout. 7' high jumpers don't grow on trees.

This is probably the best view. At this point, however, several problems seem to be implied. At 6-5 175# he'd be killed in SEC play. 4.6 speed isn't great for a wideout and after gaining enough weight/strength to go on the field, what will his speed be then? The 4.6/6-5 combo suggests more tight end as far as elite potential is concerned, but even more weight in that case. Another possibility besides QB with 4.6/6-5 could be safety with his leaping capability. But most problematic is the presumption/necessity that he must add weight. Adding any appreciable weight is counter to his main purpose, to high jump in the Olympics. Which elite world class high jumper in history weighed 220+ lbs? You don't sky 7' 5''+ carrying that much weight. Maybe he'd be the first? Unlikely. He's probably at a near optimal size now to high jump. To play SEC football, not so much. Coach Shaver's concept of how he should train to be the best high jumper in the NCAA may not be the same as the football staff's to play ANY position. Those two objectives seem to be at cross purposes, not easily compatible. You have to admire his ambition though. More power to him.

well said. if he is anything like his dad then he is a take at whatever position he and the coaches think is best. his dad, playing with less than stellar olines in Philly, was all-pro four times and MVP once. just an amazing athlete who could make any throw look easy. with a team like the Raiders or the Chargers he would, IMO, be have been HOF material.

our shep to receiver do over kind of fizzled. Hopefully this will turn out better should he choose to go that route yeah play on words.

Good observation, but I saw Justin Hunter as a junior in high school high jump 6' 10" and he was the same build, about 6' 4.5" and 178. This kid is a freak athlete and needs to be recruited hard for some position. He will gain body mass in the next couple of years naturally.
I personally saw Justin Hunter, as a high school junior, high jump 6' 10", long jump 25' 1", and triple jump over 49' in horrible cross winds and cold weather. He would have won the ACC championship with each of those feats.
So, again, don't make light of this kid. He is a truly freakish athlete and what he becomes remains to be seen...

It is nice to "want" to do some things. But if he has Olympic hopes i the high jump, it will take a year round commitment to go that route. Bulking up would NOT be an option to remain in the elite high jumpers in the country.

Pending what school he wants to attend, yeah. For example- Joe Montana's son at Tulane...do you think Les or Saban would have offered him to play QB??
