Payton Envisions Vilma, Harper, Smith in black and gold

However, it is a very Sean Payton like answer as he goes on to say you have to pay close attention to production and the cap.

“First off, I do envision those guys in a Saints uniform, and yet I’m also realistic and understand that every year since the beginning of free agency the percentage of players on your roster that turns over is different than it used to be,”

“There was a time where you had your draft. What two or three rookies were going to beat out the veterans on a roster?

“It’s different now. There’s an economic factor to it. It’s as simple as a household budget. If you’re going to have cable and you’re going to have heat, you might not be able to have something else. So you’ve really got to look closely at your production, you’ve got to look closely at your cap.”

wwl interview
I listened to it and was gonna link it but the overriding thought I had was how pathetic is is that a NFL city can do no better than this for radio. Payton has to be thinking sometimes "these are some fukkin dumbasses". Like "When do you get back together with the players?"
Unfortunately, the one thing with Coach back in the saddle is that we'll have a slim diet of juicy sound bites. Payton isn't far from the Belichick drone of parsing out no real information.

Pretty obvious what he is saying here:
Cable is code for Smith because even if you don't need it, it's good to have in the background sometimes
Heat is code for Roman Harper and his blitz abilities .
Goodbye Vilma aka just something else we don't need

If we had to cut just one, who would y'all rather it be?

I would rather Smith be cut. I think Harper will do well in Ryan's scheme

Smith easily. That fat piece of crap is carrying the biggest cap hit.

Smith.
I think Vilma is still serviceable at the right price and Harper can be effective with someone else other than Jenkins (i.e. Darren Sharper)
If I had to KEEP just one, it would be Vilma for a variety of reasons.

Vilma should be cut first. He left his last team bc he hates that system of 3-4
Smith still has some gas and we are thin enough at end
Harper is a good saftey, will do well in Ryans system, and frick the haters.

Will Smith for sure. Doesn't fit in the new system and is way overpaid. Harper and Vilma at least could have a shot at working in the 3-4.

Thanks guys
I think Harper will do much better in Ryan's scheme. I'd choose smith mostly bc of the cap.

Smith- this is what pushing the cap forward in restructuring gets ya- a declining player in a scheme he's never played that will cost so much to cut him that you might keep him if he stays on the cheap.
Vilma- he left NYJ cuz of them switching to 3-4. % years older, slower, and dinged up I can't imagine him being a better fit now
Harper- has some game if used properly, most useful of these but the most cap savings to be had from cutting. That combo makes me think restructure most likely.

Smith because of his cap hit, personally i think he would do well as a 34 end.

I think eventually they end up cutting Vilma and Smith. Smith will be expensive to cut but I don;t see him giving the Saints the kind of discount they would need to keep him. Vilma is one of my favorite Saints, but as everyone has pointed out he is older and doesnt play well in the 3-4.

That's the kiss of death.
Translation: "Loomis will make the decision whether they're in Black & Gold going forward...it's a money deal. If Mickey can work it out, we'll see if they make the team."
