The Marines Memorial Hotel and Museum in SF has quite the collection of old Marine Corps sabers. Not that nice of a hotel but if you like history . . .

This is incorrect. The USMC and the USN are sister services under the Department of The Navy. The Department of The Navy is headed by a civilian, The Secretary of The Navy. The Marines are not a branch of the USN, but obviously work with the USN.

It's my favorite part of the uniform.
Too bad that we had to buy them at the same time we buy the rest of our dress uniforms. That $400 uniform allowance helped out some (sword is $650-750), but it barely put a dent in the $2800 total I spent on all of my uniforms.

True. I think the Navy authorized optional wear of a cutlass for Chief's. I didn't get one in the Coast Guard until I switched from enlisted to officer. They are beautiful, handmade in Germany and you pay the $450 yourself. It will be a nice heirloom.
