Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

What do people see in this movie? I saw it in the theater and came away thinking it was terrible.

Try it again. I didn't really like it when I saw it in theaters either, mainly because it was so much different than I was expecting. Watched it again a couple years later, and I thought it was excellent. I've seen it several times since then too. It's slow-going for about 100 minutes, but the final hour is terrific. Beautiful cinematography, great score. And for me personally, I could really relate to Affleck's character (Ford). That made it that much better in my book.

Yeah, maybe I should. Generally I like beautifully-shot, slow, and subtle movies where nothing obvious happens.

SONOFA I'm late to the party. I think the back to the futures should count as one.

It was rated X when it was first released. It's one of the movies that lead to the creation of NC-17 rating since X had been taken over by the porno industry.

Probably the best western of the past 15 years for me. Almost a perfect western. Crazy good acting, eerie, beautifully shot, and non exaggerated. Showed what a truly bothered and crazy person James was. He's one of the more interesting guys of all time for me though. The obsessed/stalker Ford was just as an interesting character himself. I don't mind slow movies though, and this had a nice pace to it, and it was almost like it had two endings.

I was compiling my list, and was thinking of the reason for the list.

This isn't a "Greatest Movies of All Time List" it's a "Movies We Agree Don't Suck" list.

With that in mind, I am going to purposely leave off certain movies that are listed multiple times in favor of movies that don't suck, but aren't nearly as good, in order to get the list to around 200 movies.

This is my disclaimer before I get attacked and have to defend my list.

List will be out later today.

Nothing wrong with that. I can already see the movies on my list are going to end up not getting many votes. Not sure if any of my top three have gotten a vote yet.

I've got mine narrowed downed to 84.

We get 80 votes right? Can we make it 84? I don't know if I can cut those last four out.

Nevertheless, I listed the 40 movies I consider to be the best I've seen (i.e., my personal favorites). Don't think too much into it. If everyone lists their 40 favorite movies, I expect there will be >200 on the combined list. If you do what you say - "purposely leave off certain movies that are listed multiple times in favor of movies that don't suck, but aren't nearly as good" - then the rankings lose their significance. I think it would be cool if the 200 movies listed represented the M/TV board's 200 favorite movies. In order.

I put There Will Be Blood #2 on my list. It is genuinely my second favorite movie ever, after The Godfather.

It's the fun list. I didn't put much effort into ranking them and I left out a lot of older movies. Frankly, I have far too many favorites and ranking a top 40 would take days.

I may do a write-up or two, but I don't need to be on your gay little list.

So am I to assume that your list is 1-40 as is? I do want you to put the effort into ranking them, that's how we determine the whole selection.

Also, are you sure you want to participate in this "gay" little enterprise at all?

It's just a way to track writers, that's all.

It's amazing. And weird. One of the most beautifully-shot films ever.

Seems like I need to see Assassination again. I can't really think of a western in the last 15 years off-hand I would describe as great, besides the tv show Deadwood. (there are quite a few that are very good, however, imo).

Whoa whoa blue, take it easy. Most of us have a ton of favorites. It won't take you days, just take that list and cut out some, it's not that hard.

Also, why is being on the list gay?
