Actually, it's to the contrary. The wisdom I've gained through experience in life, business and representing the general public leads me to believe that, more often than not, "common" sense is not particularly reliable.

It appears you don't quite understand common sense.

re: What do you guys think?

quote:

1. please explain what you think the current (as of today) deficit is.

2. compare that number to the (cited in two links by people from both sides of this argument) factcheck.org statement that as of Jan. 20 2009 (the day Obama took office) the deficit was 1.2 trillion dollars.

3. If you cannot provide any reasonable means of debunking that number please do not try. Rather compare that number with what you think the deficit is as of today (step 1)

4. ask yourself "is Obama really as big of a spender as Republicans make him out to be?"

Current FY13 deficit, as of Jan 31, 2013 stands at $290.415 billion LINK

2. It's impossible to compare the two because the full FY13 deficit is simply a projection and not fact.

3. Projection vs reality. In FY09 the CBO projected our budget would be balanced by FY12 if we followed the Bush budget. And for FY13 they have already increased by projected deficit by >300 billion in a 6 month span.

4. Yes, very much so because he has made the one time cost of TARP (estimated at $700 billion when passed but in reality only $24 billion) a part of the budget baseline instead of being a one time cost as intended.

While we're talking about TARP how much of the TARP repayments have been included in revenue that counted under Obama. Since TARP was a Bush expenditure, using your logic, shouldn't we include every single payment back to the government with Bush? If we did that then Bush's FY09 deficit would only stand at $500 billion. But of course we can't do that because the repayments bolster Obama's numbers slightly and would be helpful for Bush's.

I think he just despises the word "common."

It does't even take common sense to know that you were wrong in this argument just simple reading comprehension. I posted all the links you need to complete my simple 4 step process.

My original question was, do you think the deficit has grown under Obama? Well according to the links I've posted and even the ones the opposition (most people in this thread) posted. The deficit has indeed shrunken since Jan, 20 2009. It rose at first and has now receded to a level lower than the original deficit Obama inherited.

Trust me. I do. Far too often, "common" sense is an excuse to avoid reliable, empirical evidence.

But it hasn't. It's just currently "projected" to do so.

I don't understand why you find the concept something to even gloat about (great, he's finally spending marginally less than Dubya's final year!) but, even by that weak standard, you have to wait until October.

Sorry.

FIFY, and since TARP only cost $24 billion, as estimated by CBO, and not the original $700 billion (which was all counted in the FY09 deficit) wasn't the real FY09 deficit "inherited" by Obama $500 billion?

So if he he is spending marginally less than Dubya's final year does that really mean he his a huge spender? It tells me that we are spending less under Obama even after a bailout and Healthcare reform.

honestly you should take a look at some light reading to educate yourself as to what the "deficit" really is. its just a made up number, just like the UE%.

try wikipedia. US budget deficit
take a look at whats excluded from the "deficit" yet counts towards the debt. think of those items like the people who quit looking for work and are no longer "unemployed".

if you are a fraction of the intellectual you think you are, youll read it and find that you are being misled.

I don't want to read 9 pages but are there actually people in here that are arguing that a bureaucrat with power in the federal government is lowering spending?
