I remember reading last year some analyst felt the chiefs had the most talented roster in the NFL minus QB....alex smith doesn't change much, but wow for a top 35 pick I dunno

The bottom line is fairly obvious. If Alex Smith proves to be a solid starting QB in KC then it is a bargain. If he is marginal or worse then the Chiefs have gotten hosed.
But it is probably a gamble worth taking if you are the Chiefs. There's no QB worth taking at the start of the first round and AS has shown (at least in some circumstances) that he can play NFL football. That's more than they would be guaranteed to get if they drafted a couple QBs over the next two years with their second round picks.

Disagree, if he continues to play like he has past couple years under Harbaugh it may end up being a better bargain than what they could have obtained with that second round pick.

I was referring to the AFC West. Tell me this, who would you get with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round? I would easily trade for Alex Smith who is wayyy better than drafting/developing/guessing on Matt Barkley? It was a safe move. He doesn't turn the ball over. The Chiefs were - 24 in turnover ratio. While the 49ers and Andy Reid were both + 20. The Chiefs would drive the ball down the field and then Cassel would throw a pick or get his WR's killed in the process. Smith will be accurate, can scramble (something the Chiefs haven't had...ever) and he will bring his leadership to KC. Look, as a Chefs fan I am sick and tired of watching them lose. They needed a desperate "for sure" move...instead of rebuilding..again. #2 pick in the second round is nothing when it comes to your franchise QB.

Lol. Smith has more arm strength and athleticism in his left fingernail than Barkley has in his entire body. Smith is so much better of a QB than Barkley it's a shame to even compare the two.

Right....because Alex Smith has been so good in his career 
If he hadn't had his career resurrected by Harbaugh, he would have been the biggest No. 1 bust in the past few decades behind JaMarcus. 49ers should have never passed on Rodgers
Although I will agree the 2005 draft was terrible in terms of the top 10

Look what he did to the Saints in 2 years ago in the playoffs. Alex Smith was money on every pass. He has grown into the QB people predicted when they drafted him. He has had 8.....8 offensive coordinators in 9 seasons! How many players could flourish with that??? He has weapons and the right coaching staff...and definitely motivated. The Chiefs can win the West next year for sure now.

Do you honestly think Rodgers would have succeeded on that 2-14 team. He would have been thrown right in on the worst roster in the NFL, just like Alex Smith was. Next rotate Rodgers in and out of 8 systems and 8 coordinators.
Now let Alex Smith ride the bench and learn the pro game for a few years while coming in on a much better roster.

Given that Smith was considered a bust not that long ago, I don't really think him leaving the coach that resurrected his career is really a "for sure" move.

The #34 pick is really important given that the Chiefs could have ended up with a starter at a number of positions. It's not like the Chiefs didn't need to replace two starters on their defensive line (since Dorsey is a free agent and Jackson might be cut due to his contract escalators kicking in). They also need more depth at WR, OG, C, and another ILB. And that's not to mention we don't know how high the conditional pick could be next year.

You realize that for the first 7yrs of his career SF blew hard. Had a terrible Oline. 7 different OC's and had no playmakers.
KC plays everyone tough in the West. They almost beat Denver in KC last year with that shittey team and terrible QB play.
He only needs to be a game manger.
Great trade. The 34th pick could always be a bust.

You can't use the argument that Smith had it worse because he was throw into the fire while Rodgers got to sit behind Favre. If Smith was truly SF's franchise QB, Harbaugh wouldn't have been chomping at the bit, waiting for an excuse to move on to CK
Rodgers would have prospered right away in Green Bay regardless of Favre

Rodgers is great and might have succeeded in worse circumstances but this is an over-statement at best.
Everything changes everything and a great prospect can be ruined by a suitably bad environment. Similarly a marginal player may eventually develop into something great in teh right circumstances.

I just provided a short list of people who have done just fine being throw right into situations.
Luck went to a shitty team and made them better.
Weeden wasn't terrible for the Browns
Locker has been pretty good when healthy
Mark Sanchez was thrown into a good franchise with the Jets and he's been terrible.
Blaine Gabbert is the only QB in recent memory who has just been atrocious. Verdict is still out on Tannehill and Ponder. Bradford has also been underwhelming

Here's some more info from rotoworld to see how crazy this trade was for the Chiefs.

#34 and a 2nd/3rd round pick next year?!? I can only imagine the Eagles were wanting too much for Foles. Or maybe Reid didn't want another ruined draft pick on his resume.
