Full story of such a terrible accident
#1 reason to not just shoot into the wild and be 100% positive of your target. I pray for both families involved. What an awful burden to bare.

Collier, 68, was the last witness to take the stand. He told jurors he was shooting to kill when he fired the .270-caliber bullet that caused the death of Christopher Ochoa, 20, of French Camp, California, in October 2011 near Silver Falls State Park.
Collier was hunting with his 12-year-old grandson and said he was sure he was shooting a bear

Terrible story. Hopefully both families can put it behind them eventually.
I am curious about the details though, at 100yds , what conditions caused him to think it was a bear? clothing? target in brush? low light?

This was my first question as well. I searched but did not find any other details to this story.
I am far from 60 but I am old enough to realize my eyes are not as good as they once were. I wonder what the state of his vision is?

Sounds like he shot him at more than 100 yards. When he was walking up he realized at 100 yards he had shot a human and thought it was his grandson, then realized he wasn't dressed like the body on the ground.

Another reason to wear hunter's orange all of the time in the woods. You can't trust the next guy out that you may encounter regardless of where you hunt.
I am guilty of not wearing orange at my lease when I am on the ground. I need to do better.

A while back a man in lower Concordia parish killed two bear thinking they were hogs. At least that was his story.

I don't understand how you mistake a person for any animal while looking through a scope. I don't even understand how you pull up your rifle and point it at anything that you mistake for an animal. With the binos out there today is it really that hard to bring a pair and clarify anything you think might be an animal?

There is some resemblence in hogs & bears but a man is different. Also the guy should've had on orange.

sounds like negligent homicide at the least, IYAM.

I usually hate putting people in jail that really thought they were doing no wrong, but this is kinda far fetched.
I'd like to know as well, the other details on why he thought it was a bear. i feel sorry for both families, but this story is a bit shady.

Maybe; but the responsibility is 100% on the guy who pulled the trigger.
(unless the guy who was shot was dressed like this):

This. At more than 100yards, there is no reason to not be able to 100% verify what your about to pull the trigger on.
If it's 15 yards and charging, I can understand the mistake.

Where is the OB moron that recently started a thread about shooting randomly into a bush?
ETA: Guy in the linked story should have thrown in jail. No excuse for mistaking a person for an animal.

Prosecutor Tiffany Underwood asked Collier why he had taken Vicodin pain killer before his blood was tested by Marion County sheriff's officials responding to the scene. Collier said he told a deputy about the prescription for a recent knee surgery and thought it would be OK to take when his knee started aching.
This is fishy. At the minimum you shouldn't be hunting when under the influence of narcotics.
Also, was it bear season then? That would be a huge determinate for me. If this is a guy that is poaching and ended up killing someone by shooting in the brush, hard for me as a juror to let him walk.

was this before the shot or after.... I am sorry, he is guilty... of at least negligent homicide and has no business hunting.
and the guy didn't even have a bear tag...

My point wasn't really about the pill he took after the shot, but the fact that he may have been under the influence of pills he had taken before/during the hunt. In addition, he may have taken the pill after the shooting to cover his tracks and so that when the drug screen came back positive he would blame the pill taken after the shooting.
