If its that cheap, then when they mass produce this it can be available over the counter for cheap and can be given out in low income areas.

A stage 1 or 2 cancer patient is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more profitable for these big pharm companies than a stage 4 soon-to-be corpse.

Note how it says nothing about how specific his test is for detecting the cancer. I suspect there is a reason for that.

SENSITIVITY = TP / TP + FN
SPECIFICITY = TN / TN + FP

Let’s say you have a group of 1000. 200 have cancer, 800 do not. You test the entire group with this kid’s assay and 600 of them test positive for the protein from which his test is based. 199 of the 200 who actually have the cancer test positive. ES UN MILAGRO!!! The test is 99.5% sensitive for this cancer!! But wait, what about those 401 poor saps who tested positive for cancer who don’t actually have the disease? The test is only about 50% specific. You have to walk into the room and tell them they might have pancreatic cancer, which is all but a death sentence. No big deal.

So in actuality a test that is 99.5% sensitive could be an awful, awful screening test, where you typically are willing to sacrifice sensitivity for the sake of specificity.

Winning a fricking science fair =/= having a magic bullet for pancreatic cancer detection. Could it potentially be a good idea? Sure. I assure you that if it is a good test it will find its way to the market. But let’s pump the brakes a bit.

What is the rate of a false positive on this test?

Make that whites: 4, since a company is about to license my IP (type of gene therapy for multiple types of cancer) from LSU, and we are about to submit a Phase I clinical trial protocol to hopefully treat our first patient at the end of this year.

Wait, I share the IP with 2 Asians. Damn, so now its up to 1469 to 4.

ETA: in an act of karma, my asian boss just walked into my office and stole my favorite pen right off my desk. WTF!?!?!?!

Yeah because if alternative energy was found those big evil oil companies wouldn't want to be the first to market with it and crush their competitors

I wish. I am about to submit a manuscript for publication in which we, for the first time ever, performed repeated types of treatments in a canine patient (spontaneous and recurrent Squamous Cell Carcinoma. We got complete eradication of huge tumors with only 2 treatments. When the tumors came back, we modified the treatment and performed an intra-patient dose escalation study and got another complete eradication. Through the entire 2 years we did not have a single side effect aside from transient bleeding after injection and another proprietary technique.

Not quite in pill form, but this was definitely a big step for cancer gene therapy.

And you can't have 1 generic test for "cancer."

You sure? I haven't even read this article but nano technology would easily make this possible and expensive.

Its impossible to make that statement at this point without prospective data. If the test is as cheap as they claim, it has a good shot at being cost effective as a screening tool.

The article is kind of misleading. The kid didn't discover the idea of using tumor markers (mesothelin in this example) for the detection/diagnosis of cancer. He developed a cheap and sensitive way to detect certain proteins in the blood that was previously much more tedious.

Kids like this should have big trophies in the high school hallways, not just the athletes. Great job on his part. I'm impressed.
