Roman Polanski

Knife in the Water
Repulsion
Cul-De Sac
Rosemary's Baby
Chinatown
The Tenant
Tess
Frantic
The Pianist
The Ghost Writer

Woody Allen

Love and Death
Annie Hall
Manhattan
Zelig
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Hannah and Her Sisters
Bullets over Broadway
Match Point
Midnight in Paris

Personally, I like Polanski's films better.

I will probably be the only one to answer with Woody Allen in this thread. He gets a lot of hate on this board.

In saying that, Chinatown is my favorite film out of all listed.

Only one I ever saw, by accident. Didn't know it was his film, as I ran across it after it started one night. Don't care to see any of his in the future.

I don't know why, but I've always had a weird fascination with Woody Allen, from when I was very young. I just loved the hilarious way he complained about everything. I never even knew his name. I'd just say "hey, it's the complaining guy" and watch whatever he was in.

And because he's made more than 2 good movies, I'll go with him.

Polanski has made more than 2 goof films, thats just retarded. And his best are better than Woody's bests. However, Woody might have a better overall body of work. But 2 completely different filmmakers.

Woody was never the same after Kramer shattered glass in his eye. He should have just stopped after that.

Wow tough one. Woody - because of Crimes & Misdemeanors - a nearly perfect film.

I Agree, gotta love Chinatown and Repulsion was epically crazy. He recently directed Carnage which thought was well done and an impressive piece of directing.

This is probably true.

Lets also ignore the fact that 1 drugged and raped a 13 year old which is an actual crime, and then fled the country, while the other is guilty of dating and marring a much younger woman (who is still married to btw) was is the adopted daughter of his former long time girlfriend and he has been married to Soon-Yi Previn longer than he was with Mia Farrow.

The answer is Woody and its really not close.

Chinatown is great, but after that the movies are solid, not great. I loved Carnage for instance, but honestly Allen writes a movie that good every few years. The Pianist is awesome. Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, etc etc are just as good or better.

Woody is one of a handful of American humorists that have defined comedy in the film/TV era. In addition, as a screenwriter and director he is more prolific and consistent. His insight into human relationships is unique.

FWIW, it is very creepy to date and marry your kinda step-daughter. The fact that they are happily married now for 20 years mitigates that a lot. Even without that, it is not anywhere near in the same universe of creepiness as drugging and butt raping a 13 year old. Come on.

Uh, you didn't even mention one of his greats - his most rewatchable movie.

God I love that movie.

Woody Allen isn't quite the creeper that Polanski is. I hate Polanski as a person more than I do Allen. I hate Woody Allen as a director.

The rant I could go on right now in regards to how much of a creeper Polanski is and how crappy a director Allen is, is pretty impressive I'm not going to lie. Rantards would be impressed.

No contest for me. Polanski by far. Would also add Death and the Maiden and The Ninth Gate as worth seeing.

All of the Allen movies I saw seemed the same. I always thought it would take living in NYNY for 10 years for me to get them.

When evaluating his films I do, in fact, ignore that "fact" . . . which is a bit of a simplification of the fact(s). Not defending Polanski's actions . . . just striving for accuracy. Besides, like I said, has no effect on the worth of his work.
