Sure, they'd be an addition to the whole equation, but no more or less than anyone else. Yes, the "intelligentsia" are often integral in raising awareness of certain films, but they are also very often just an echo chamber. Just because a film is artistically well crafted doesn't make it a good movie, much less "culturally significant." The latter has very little to do with film experts, regardless of how well-respected.

Media and culture shape each other, but I would agree with that assessment.

The critics so often get it wrong, I think they'd do more harm than good. The RT fan and critic meters are often at severe odds with each other, and the fans seem to get it right more often than the critics. The Hobbit, for example.

Fair enough. I'm not married to the idea.

Maybe throw in the IMDB rating instead?

Sounds good to me. No doubt IMDB votes include their share of idiots but through the sheer volume of votes they seem to get it mostly right from my perspective. Again to use the BCS analogy, if you look at the top 25 movies in IMDB's top 250 list, it's damn solid set of movies.

Using your formula, I nominate Schindler's List for the greatest movie of all time.

You need to add boobies to your equation though.

It's in my top 10 for sure. Just a great movie.

This is kind of a parallel to the Great Movie Project and would be nice to do.
