I'm not looking for anything on the high end. High end meaning $800

How do you want to carry it?
That is what you need to decide first.

I shot an XDs recently and didn't like it. Get a compact M&P.

S&W Shield 40 or 9mm
Ruger SR40c or SR9c
Kahr CW9
I'm thinking ankle holster most of the time.
Ruger LCR 38sp or the KLCR 357

I think a lot depends on 1) personal wants 2) location and 3) holster.
Personal wants:
Capacity
Size (Barrel and grip length)
Revolved vs semi-auto
Single vs double stack (goes w/ capacity)
Comfort
Location:
Hot climate?
Holster:
IWB vs OWB?
A good IWB holster can make carrying something like a glock 19 or XD9 service pistol manageable.
You have to weigh all of these things.
For me, I like to have capacity and I like to use the pistol I shoot with the most. So, I carry my SA XD9 4" service model. I have an Old Faithful IWB holster. I live in Texas as well.
It's probably not the most ideal thing in the world, but its my baby and I have 16 rounds ready to go. It makes me feel better than having a 5 shot snubbie, or some 380 auto pocket pistol which are much more comfortable.
With that said, I wouldn't mind trying out an XDs.

I just checked it and if you go to my first time buyers video and go to the 10:05 mark, I directly address concealed carry.

Ruger LCP- I can carry in my back pocket no matter how cold/hot it is. Another plus is, you dont have to spend 600+ dollars like you will with the Kahr. Quality 380 pocket pistol at around 325-425 dollars.
