When scouting I used to carry a 586, 8-3/8 barrel, loaded with Federal Hydra Shocks 158 Gr. JHP. Killed three does grave yard dead. One at 45 paces, one at 70 paces the other I didn't step it off. A well placed 357 round will do the job. I normally shoot a Model 29 8-3/8 barrel, Pro Point Scope, Loaded with 32 Grs. Winchester 296 powder and a Hornady 180 Gr. HP bullet. Most kills in the 30-50 yard range. Longest 122 yards measured.

I'm using a S&W 686 with a 6 inch barrel.

I'd feel undergunned up there with less than a 4" .44 magnum. Hopefully to shoot my way to a real gun.
The old timers advice to those venturing in bear country with a handgun. Be sure to file the front sight off so it don't hurt nearly as bad when the bear jams the gun up your arse barrel first.

I've heard that before somewhere. I really hope I never have to use a handgun to defend myself from anything. Chances are good that ill miss. If I do hit em, it won't be in the right spot. If I do hit em in the right spot it won't have enough power to stop it before it mauls me.

The closer the target the easier it is to hit

That's why when they ask, "What handgun would you carry to protect yourself from a large, dangerous animal?", I say, "What? Did they stop making rifles?"

Had a bear attack me one time. When he opened his mouth for his initial attack, I quickly ran my hand/arm down his throat, grab his tail, and jerk his arse inside out....I did!

What about 45 LC for deer? I know nothing about that round. But would love a SAA 45

Yeah, pretty common saying. At least up here.

I don't have doubts it would do the trick if well placed, but under duress I seriously doubt how accurate I would be with one. I'm not that great a shot with a handgun with no pressure.

You can load a .45lc to run close to .44 mag performance if you have a gun that can handle it.

I had to shoot a gun in defense one time and I was surprised. I shot VERY well. The panic and stress didn't set in until after it was over. Eta: it was with a shotgun though. With a pistol I probably would've gotten mauled.

You'd be surprised on what you can do when adrenaline sets in.

Yeah, a shotgun gives me a little more margin of error. I don't mind carrying a handgun if the guy next to me is carrying something a little more substantial, and accurate.

It wasnt so much margin for error as much as I just had a full sized gun that I was familiar with. It was a charging 300something pound pig at about 5 yards and I probably would have still missed with a pistol.
