I've only put like 110 rounds through mine since I've got it. Thanks to not being able to find ammo.

50 38s 50 158s and 12 buffalo bore 180s.

Shot a doe quartering away at around 20 yards this past fall with 158 federal hollow points. She ran about 30 yards, stopped and stood there about 5 minutes and fell dead. No pass through though, and zero blood. That worried me enough to get me some some 180 grain mags. Have not shot one with them though, so nothing to report on them.

Thx for that intel on the grains of powder. I was concerned that 140 grains is a tad light but I don't see where a Barnes cartridge is loaded with that much powder. I am a bit of a barnes fanboi.

grains refers to the weight of the bullet not the amount of powder

140 grains is the bullet weight, not the powder load

Thx for the correction. I'm not trying to turn this into a physics discussion but with a larger bullet ( in terms of grains) a cartridge would then be loaded with more powder, specifically a 140 grain cartridge vs a 180 grain?

.357mag is definitely not an ideal deer caliber. I'd use the hottest shite I could unless I was a crack shot and could hit em in the head all the time

Isn't the 357mag and 10mm really close. Which one gets the nod in power?

Dust - in the end I opted for a revolver in .357 instead of a Glock 10mm. I already own three other Glocks so I opted for something different and I'm glad I did. There's something really enjoyable about a S&W revolver. I put 100 rounds thru it last weekend and it was really a joy to shoot. I'm scoping it with a Leupold and am looking forward to sighting it in although hunting ammo is proving difficult to find.

I'm not sure. I haven't looked into it that much.

Anything short of .41mag is marginal past 30 yards IMO.

That's what I seem to keep reading. .41 seems like its a bad mother fricker.

.41 is pretty much the best compromise between power and recoil in large-frame revolvers.

In some circles it's considered better than the .44 for deer hunting for various reasons.

I have not shot a deer with my 357 yet, but I've read that you should use 158 or 180 grain swc or jacketed soft point.

This is the right answer, if conventional wisdom is to be believed.

I'd imagine ammo isn't too easy to find though

Nah it isn't very common.

It's sort of a bastard caliber. It's too big and kicks too hard for most people to want it for defense and its on the bottom end of what most people want for hunting.

I was on a hell bent mission for a .41 blackhawk when I came across a .357 for CHEAP.
