Windows 8 on phones is why...
They aren't going to compete against their own line of phones which is already almost DoA.
As for the VITA, I really really hope it does better over the next few years.. platform is amazing.

Because it is incredibly difficult to establish yourself in a new market and usually comes at the cost of billions (see Microsoft in the console market and the struggle Sony had with PSP).

Cause they aren't stupid. Only Nintendo seems to make money on handhelds. Sega, Sony, and others have all failed with handhelds. Plus, why would anyone jump into the handheld market with tablets and smart phones so prominent.

I'm the extremely rare individual.. the person that has never owned a handheld, owns a smart phone and a tablet, but yet I was drawn to the VITA.. for some extremely weird reason.

But they didn't fail. They didn't dominate the market like Nintendo did, but they craved a niche and profited. PSP even moreso since it sold over 75 million units. That's more than PS3, 360, SNES, NES, and any non-Nintendo handheld.

I am pretty sure Sega didn't profit. Vita has yet to profit but time will tell for that obviously and there have been others all try to establish themselves in the handheld market all to just fail and go bankrupt.
