I really enjoyed the mini series back when it first came out and I watch in when it comes on (very seldom IMO). Seems to me that it's pretty underrated. You rarely hear it mentioned when discussing good or great shows.

It had a ton of good actors - Gary Sinese (I think he may have gotten his start with it), Rob Lowe, Miguel Ferrer, Ray Walston, Matt Frewer, Molly Ringwald and a bunch of others. And I found the story pretty well done and tightly presented.

I know it's not the book but I thought it held up good to the book. I had a picture of the characters in my head from the book and I thought they presented them pretty close to what I had pictured. Of course they cut out tons of stuff but I thought they did a good job of that too.

Any thoughts?

I recently read the book and watched the mini-series. Maybe I did it too close to one another, but I thought the mini-series was horrible. It seems like it's mentioned in lists of best mini-series, but I could never get past the low production value. I also found the antagonists to be poorly cast, and the relationships felt forced.

Wasn't Ben Affleck supposed direct a feature soon? Any word on that?

Personally I love when it unexpectingly pops up on TV. The production value is weak and hurts Randall Flagg the most.. They should have used his subtle creepiness throughout, they fricked it up in the the last quarter. Overall, it's still one of my favorites.

I was able to overlook the production values. I guess they spent all their money on talent or something.

But I agree that the downfall of Flagg storyline left a little to be desired. Kind of rushed and not developed as well as it could have been.

But the show had some good moments. Mother Abagail was presented pretty well. Trashcan Man I thought was done justice. Ray Walston was good as Glenn. And of course M O O N that spells moon.

Any novel with the level of detail as The Stand will need a miniseries to fully cover the material and there will be compromises. The only major thing they changed in tone is that the novel reads a lot darker than the miniseries, which apparently was tweaked for a wider audience. Other than the tone, it didn't vary too far from the source material overall.

I rate it as one of the better screen adaptations of novel (up there with To Kill a Mockingbird and Hunt for Red October, both examples of books I read well in advance of watching the film, and place as very faithful to the source material.)
