If you are not interested in random college baseball trivia, go ahead and skip to the next post. The Shockers made it to the CWS title game that year, losing to Miami 9-3. They went 73-14 that year. The Shockers fell victim to the famous Miami "hidden ball" play earlier in the CWS, a game which Miami would win 4-3. Skip Bertman was an assistant coach on that team. How did the Shockers get to 73 wins? Tons of double headers vs. tons of sketchy teams. Apparently there were no rules on how many games a team could play back then, so the Shockers went to work. Among their conquests: Grand Canyon St. Edwards (Texas) twice Fort Hays (4 times) Wayne State (Nebraska) twice Baker (twice) Minnesota-Morris (3 times) William Jewell (only once...they actually LOST the first game of a DH to them) Bemidji State (twice) NE Oklahoma (twice) Winona St. (twice) Emporia St. (3 times) Phillips (twice) Kansas Newman (once) Texas Wesleyan (twice) They scored well over 20 runs in a lot of these games. No idea if the DH games went 7 or 9 innings. I have never been a Gene Stephenson fan, and he ought to be ashamed to claim any of these wins on his all-time coaching record.

I don't think they put a limit on the number of games you could play until the late 80's - early 90's. Teams like Texas and Miami would regularly play well over 60 games in the regular season.

I understand they dont mean a lot and beating Maryland isnt really great, but look who Vandy and USCe and some of the other teams lost to. Teams worse than Maryland.
Right, but when a team wins 2/3 on a weekend, you aren't going to see some huge paradigm shift in the rankings, esepcially after just the first week of the season. You should know this if you played baseball in college.

Skip Bertman averaged 18.3 losses per season. The fewest losses for any of LSU's 6 national title teams is 13.
If the legendary Skip Bertman averaged 18.3 losses per season and still found a way to win 5 National Championships, then LSU fans should not become unglued when the Tigers drop their first game or first series of the year. IIRC, posted elsewhere, everyteam in the CWS last year ended up with at least 18 losses for the seaon. If a team plays 66 games a year (includ. post season) and loses 18, then that team still has a winning percentage of 72.7 % . That is slightly better than going 7-3 every ten games played. 20-10 in the SEC wins the Championship most years and that is just 66.6 %. No one needs to get down about losing a game this year to Southeastern or McNeese or ULL, if it happens. The true barometer of success is in the SEC play + regionals and supers. If the Tigers can handle their own in Conference and regiona/supers, then anything can happen in Omaha. I don't believe anyone on LSU's team will be overlooking anyone this June.
