I know they had a living social deal the other day. Anyone take advantage?

I did just to try it out. Overall the building was beautiful. Old firehouse across from the Saulet Apartments turned into the restaurant. Ambiance was nice and very open, maybe too open.

For apps we had crawfish boudin balls with pickled veggies and a spicy sauce. They were pretty solid overall, I tasted more boudin than crawfish. ALso had the fried oyster salad with roasted kale. Oysters were good , and got about 5 of them. The roasted kale was interesting. Kind of just disintegrated when you put it in your mouth, The oysters had a very light vinaigrette on them. I think a nice remoulade sauce would have been much better here. But a nice dish overall

Entrees were pretty basic but good. We had the flank steak which was cooked perfectly, over puree potatoes, and some fresh spinach with some sort of light sauce on it. Spinach would have been better served sauteed than raw. The steak had a nice bernaise sauce. Overall solid, not great but solid. Other entree was the "fish of the day" which was scallops with a pumpkin puree and wilted spinach. This only came with two scallops, which i thought was under a normal portion size for an entree. Most places I get scallops put 3 on there. They were cooked well and the pumpkin puree was a nice addition.

Dessert was coffee and chickory creme brulee with small homemade beneigts. These were great, but could have been even better served warm. They were room temp, but really would have stood out had they been like a traditional hot beneigt.

Bill without the groupon deal would have been about 85, with the groupon it was about 30. I'd go back and give them a try for brunch. It was a really nice place and not to expensive as we looked over their regular menu. I'd like to see them expand their menu a bit with some more creative entrees. They had the basics, duck breast, flank steak, fish of the day, and a chicken breast. It just seemed to lack imagination or creativity. I hope they make it because that would be a terrible building to waste.

Service was ok, not great. Good cocktail list but wine list is very spotty and small.

7/10 overall.

Seems they've improved after firing their orginial chef, Chris Cody. I went there months ago, around the same time Brett Anderson put out his review of the place. I agreed with his sentiment- that it was horrible.

yea i could sense that given the living social deal that they needed business. The place is magnificent. If they can't make it work, someone will buy it and put it to good use.

It was pretty decent as a whole, but not somewhere I would make a destination to go to in nola. You would think they could get a lot of walkover business with Saulet being across the street.

For sure, it's a great building.

Was the owner awkwardly walking around to each table?

He came by after our food was dropped off and we had been eating a few minutes. It didn't come off as creepy to me. He didn't hover or anything like that. I just found everything to be too basic. I like going to restaurants to get things that I can't normally make myself to a certain quality. Nothing on that menu was very challenging in the least imo.

just read it. damn, it was more scolding to the owner and chef. sort of a "you can do better and i expect better of you" kind of review. Its almost like they got lazy with such a fine building that the ambiance would take care of the food.

Now i did notice a complete overhaul of the normal menu. I saw none of what he was talking about in that write up on that menu. But what I saw was nothing really exciting. Nothing that pushed the limits or food experience. It was just boring shite I can get anywhere or make at home. Having a chicken breast entree is probably the biggest red flag i saw. Chicken is boring. If you are going to do it, it better be damn interesting, and this wasn't.

I just looked at the current menu on their website. Very tepid entree choices. I agree 100% with the chicken breast

is it because it's more of a back street than most? I figured with the amount of residents in saulet and around that area it would get a fair amount of traffic. Kinda sad for such a great building.

Just read review, Anderson went pretty far. I wonder if he had an issue with him in the past. I've never been to Dijon, but I can't imagine a review like that is suppose to do anything other than sink it. I don't think anyone would read that and think to give Dijon a shot.

I always liked him as a reviewer, but when that one came out, I got the impression that he was going out of his way to do a "hit piece" type review for his resume -- something he self-admittedly had sort of abstained from doing post-Katrina -- and that this Dijon joint was simply the unlucky beneficiary of his need to do that on his way out.

I've never eaten at Dijon, though.

However, it does appear that Anderson's review sort of spooked them into really dumbing down their menu.

I think that was one of Brett's last pieces before he left the T-P full time.

Fitz found the need to go visit the place right after that review and also did not write a very good review of them.

The review directly led to them parting ways with their chef.

I can say this about his review, it was harsh but true. Here's what I posted after I went, which was before his review came out.
quote:

I actually ate there last week and was hesitant to post a review because my experience was so pitiful.

Wife and I walk in, theres one other couple in the entire huge restaurant. We get seated quickly and ordered a round of drinks. Didn't hear from the waitress for a while, we could see her in the back preparing bread for God knows who.

Finally give our orders, food was completely meh, not one memorable taste or dish at all. I know I started with the pulled pork ravioli, everything on the plate was bland and white. My wife got the crab en phillo, was ok but had a bitter taste to it.

I got the duck entree, which they served pretty much well done, which is a shame because it actually had a chance to be decent. It had some type of mashed potatoes and string sweet potatoes with a corn relish, nothing special. My wife ordered a steak, medium rare, came medium well.

The one thing I observed that struck me the most, two couples came in after us and each had to stand at the front door for a while because the hostess was in the back bs'ing with the other staff. The owner came and talked to us after the meal and I didn't have the heart to tell him that his food was terrible and that his employees are not attentive, I just wanted to GTFO.

I got the bill and was pissed. No extra charges or wrong orders or anything like that, I just felt like I'd been had. I could have gone to Lilette, Gautreau's, Patois and a host of other restaurants and paid the same or less for an exponentially better meal.

TL;DR: it sucked

yeah i think so. and the bordering neighborhood is kind of sketchy.

my family had stake in the place when it was called Fire. The food was pretty good but the place was empty nearly every night. The same operation moved to Grayton Beach and it has been pretty successful there.

i think something was in the space between Fire & Dijon, but didnt last long. Within the last 6-7 years, its been 3 restaurants and has sat vacant for long stretches too. Who knows. It is a damn cool spot.

I agree, being blunt is tough business. You may in the future consider hinting around that you found flaws. Another way is to actually try to contact the owner/chef after. Usually you can find an email address which is less personal. If you had this bad an experience you should explain. They should want to hear it, if not, they aren't ready for business.

You have convinced me though. I live 3 blocks away and will not try this place.

I mean they apparently got a new chef in and "streamlined" the menu, so the owner obviously tried to improve it. Hell I'd go back and have drinks on their patio, but I wouldn't pay for food.

Looks like the place has gotten great reviews on opentable.

I'd give them a chance. Sounds like the owner is trying hard especially if he's coming out to every table and changing things based on reviews.

As far as a shitty wait staff, that can be a difficult challenge. Hiring the right people is key in any business though and it seems this can be the source of some problems.

he's going to have a tough time getting decent wait staff in there until he starts getting regular business.

I found the food to be pretty good. But this is new orleans and pretty good doesn't cut it. It's not some place I'm going to seek out to go, like Boucherie, Herbsaint, etc. It's a place I know I could probably get a last minute table at for mother's day brunch and have the food be solid enough to have a good time.

I went when it first opened. It sucked. They have changed chefs since then, but I refuse to go back.
