Soccer 'header' impact likened to hard punch.

Glad Goodell isn't in FIFA.

The data showed the average forces of a soccer-ball header were similar to those exerted on the head by punches from amateur boxers

Imagine if they took the header out of the game.

I'm no scientist but if the forces are the same why do headers not hurt at all but punches to the face do?

I'm not under the impression that headers feel too great, and I'm sure it would be a different story if you were to take 'headers' off the face. Im sure it would hurt quite a lot.

If you hit one right it doesn't hurt and I don't really consider getting hit in the face a "header". If the argument is getting drilled in the face is similar to a punch I'll agree.

I imagine the force from the ball is spread out over a greater area than the force of a punch.

Almost makes me feel bad for RVP getting face blasted by Ronaldo

Yeah I didn't read the article but if the forces are equal then this isn't that big of a deal. The ball compresses and spreads that force out.

The Germans may start another World War.

A lot of the time when you're heading in a match though it's not on that perfect spot that makes it not hurt, especially whilst tussling with a defender.
So they do have a little bit of a point, I mean a good header and a knock in the temple is very small margin of error for a ball traveling that fast with the other player on your nuts.

I'm pretty sure it feels a lot better than getting hit in the face by a boxer.

Compared to taking a ball to the face, it is the same. According to this study.

Okay, but that hardly seems like something to get worked up about.

Maybe the national team, but that's about it.
