I put it in the mid tier of Pixar efforts. Could have been about 10-15 mins shorter, but I do like the movie.

Caveat: I realize it's a rip-off of "Doc Hollywood" (which I also like - and not just because of Julie Warner's T and A [which are righteous]).

Certainly not Pixars best. I am shocked that out of all the Pixar licenses, this one got a sequel green lit so fast.

Whatever sells I guess.

Merch. Cars was one of the fastest/best selling merchandise movies of all time. IIRC, it made something ridiculous like $500 million in the first 9 months (solely in merch).

As for the movie, it's a really good movie (like all Pixar movies are), but was definitely too long. However, it's one of the more gorgeous movies in recent memory...the scenery is beautiful.

My favorite was The Incredibles. That's just a good superhero movie, whether or not you're watching it with kids.

It's a good movie. I think Up, the Incredibles, Toy Story I & III, How to Train Your Dragon, and Monsters inc are all better. But I still like it, I think it's the most popular with the kids though

Eta: and Wall-E

I never liked it. I thought the other Pixar films were better.

It's by far the weakest Pixar movie which isn't that much of an insult given the high quality of most of their films. But the original Cars is a decent way to spend two hours, but nothing special. It got a sequel, which is the first bad movie Pixar has ever made, because of merchandising.

They still get a pass for it. If Cars paying the bills means we get Up and Wall-E, then it's a worthwhile trade.

It's completely inane and makes no sense. It's also, kind of an insult to kids.

While Up and the Incredibles (and the rest of Pixar films) treat kids like maturing humans, Cars throws all logic out of the window.

It did sell a quadrillion toys, so there's that.

We're on the same page on this film. I don't hate it, but aside from its sequel, its almost without question Pixar's weakest effort.

Over $5 billion worth (before the sequel even came out).

Fwiw, I liked Cars 2 as well, but both are bottom-tier Pixar movies (which like Baloo said isn't really a slight). I have them both ranked above Ratatouille btw.

I'm interested to hear how Cars is an insult to kids though. The movie, taken at face value (which is all that is should be IMO), makes sense just fine. I've heard the arguments about how weird it is that there are no humans in the Cars world (and I don't think that matters either), but how is it actually insulting to kids?

Cars = Princesses for boys

Sole purpose of it's existence as well as it's sequel.

I really like Ratatouille, but I know that is their most polarizing film.

My 3 year old loves his Lighting McQueen toys more than anything else so they did something right.
