What brand did you use? I have been comparing several looking for the variable speed motor. I have only found it with American Standard model so far.

Almost all brands offer two stage cooling now. Trane, Carrier, and Lennox are a few that come to mind. It is all a preference and basically has a variable speed drive on the fan to keep a small amount of airflow going over the coil to really drop the humidity level in the house. If you have the money to burn then by all means it is a good feature but I would not lose any sleep over not getting it. Find the most reputable company and go with that.
