Any advice before making my purchase? I'm stuck between these two.

If big box retail, cub cadet. MUCH easier to work on. That's all I got.

John Deere as long as it comes with a honda or kohler engine

I've had both. I bought a Cub Cadet from Lehman's farm in Thibodeayx a few years ago and had all kinda problems with the neutral start switch to a point where I asked them to sell it for me.
Have a JD I bought from Lowes and I cut the four yards around my house with it. Great machine. I send it to Sunshine Equipment yearly for pm/blades, etc

If you decide to get a Deere, get it from the dealer. DO NOT BUY THE LOWES LINE OF JOHN DEERE.

Look at Hustler.
Built like brick shithouses (unlimited lifetime deck warranty), super-simple design, and never breaks, yet half the price of most commercial grade mowers (because they don't advertise)

Might be better to post your budget. Someone might know of something better...
ETA: How much land are you cutting?

I bought a Cub Cadet LTX 1040 a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it so far.
I would also recommend buying it from a dealer. I got mine from Watson Lawnmower and they lubed/greased the fittings, checked the oil, straightened the alignment, checked air pressure, etc. when I bought. You're not gonna get that from a box store. They're just gonna roll it off the pallet onto your trailer.

Depends. If you get a JD from a JD dealership..then that by far. From a box store like Lowes or Home Depot....flip a coin. there is a difference in quality from dealer and box store ones.
