Government baby sitting service.
Every parent/guardian in the United States knows that their kids are expected to attend kindergarten at age 5 ready to begin the formal education process. We also have the Head Start program to assist them in getting their kids ready for kindergarten. Thus, any child who shows up unprepared for kindergarten should be deemed prima facie evidence of parental neglect. We could remove the kids from the homes where they are not being properly nurtured at a much lower cost than to implement universal pre-school which would really be nothing more than free day care.

Is this something worthy of investment?

Philosophically, perhaps. However, our irresponsible, unaccountable, and reckless government and society will turn it into a perverse pigfrick and complete waste...so no.

Yes make all aspects of life entitlements, because then the ruling class has all the power and control. That is what this is really about for so called liberals. Two classes; ruling class and everyday people with no one having more than anyone else. Wasn't there a nation that tried this? I think it was called the Soviet Union!

Whoaaaaa! Easy now, nobody wants kids having access to books. Just go sit them down in front of the television and walk away. That's the American way!

All of my friends who are educators also claim that while they would love to be paid more, that its the parents that are the problem. Althought they do acknowledge that some are there just riding out to retirement. The only way is to enforce accountability.

I would like to see teachers held accountable for some of it. Maybe we could increase pay and demand performance, that way we could move out the dead weight and get someone in there who knows what they are doing. But I also think that if your child is failing, they should be tested for all learning disabilities. If they have none and they do not improve and still fail a grade or a class, then the parents need to reimburse the school system for those wasted resources. No money? Then your child's attendance the next year is dependant on you performing some sort of service at the school. Fail to perform that duty? Child neglect charges.

Of course, this will never happen.

Instead parents are incentivized to have more.

Kids in Finland start formal schooling at age 7. I keep reading that Finland is awesome so maybe we should take note.

ETA: Wait. Nevermind. I just read they have free universal daycare and kindergarten starting at 8 months.

How many school teachers employed by the government will spend class time teaching students about the threats that government poses to freedom?

Are you really making this argument with regards to preschool teachers?

Preschool students can't even spell a word in that sentence much less understand the idea of "freedom"

They also have free college education.

The gov. would take your kids right from the womb if you allowed it. More years for indoctrination of their little minds.

Yes, I'm just glad I didn't bring it up.

I have a friend from Finland coming to visit in June. I'll have to relate to him the obsession some people have with his region of the world.

I guess he could mandate that people put their children in private pre-school and fine those that don't in order to pay for those that can't afford it. I'm not sure, but I think we have a precedent where the government can do this sort of thing...

Until they allow kids in from Alpha Centauri Prime, they shouldn't call it "galactic" much less "universal".
