Calling 1911 Experts - need some direction

I have a few questions in the search for my 1911. I like the Colt Series 80 blued in all steel. Eventually id like to add a few things to it (stainless barrel/trigger, new grips) nothing crazy.
1. Where to start looking for one? or is it easier to order from colt's website. I live in thibodaux so i can go to BR or NOLA if need be Id like to keep the trips to a minimum but i would like to put my hands on one first.
2. What other options do i have in the $900-$1300 price range. The gun will be left at home/used at the range. I already have a CC pistol.
TIA

Colts are pretty hard to come by. You may wanna check GunBroker or other sites like that first.
I've actually seen a Series 80 in a pawn shop in New Orleans, but I doubt you'll find one that way.
$900 - $1300 will buy you a pretty decent 1911. I'm a fan of the Springfields, but you can also get a Ruger or S&W in that price range. Even a few Kimbers fall in there.

Perhaps if you plan on doing some customization down the road you should look into Rock Island Armory 1911. They are good 1911's at a low price and any smith can tailor it as you want to change it.

Don't be afraid of the scandium 4.25" I shot one the other day and was really surprised at how good it handled. Not a fan of the external extractor but that thing is fine. Pictures do it no justice either.

It is interesting how quickly the OP dropped the idea of owning a Colt. Most replies seemed to jump off to other brands also. Just an observation.
Anyway, Colt is offering a very nice line-up of 1911 pistols right now...
Rail Gun
XSE series
Combat Elite
Series 70
etc.
My personal object of lust from Hartford at the moment: The Special Combat Government:
Would marry.

Don't waste your time with a Colt. Get a Dan Wesson.
