Either that or they are really fricking sure they won it.

ANd I have to say it: I've seen a lot of people lose arguments and punctuate it with, "That's how you know when someone has lost an argument. They resort to name calling." After they rightfully were called a fricking moron.

Not saying that's what's happening here. Haven't been reading this thread. Just saying.

I didn't call him anything. I've been completely civil with him. He can't provide a single reason why the race of a suspect should be withheld from a BOLO description, if public safety is the primary concern, so he finally resorted to name calling.

I hear you. I really was "just sayin."

The only reason is fear of insulting people or making them feel bad. "everytime they do a BOLO, it's gotta be a black dude."

It might, might, be laudable, if it weren't so stupid.

The bigger question is does anyone ever get caught by these "be on the lookout" things?

I am from New York City originally. There are two terrific all news stations there, CBS880 and 1010WINS. They might read this BOLO which could describe half the men in New York. Maybe 25%, but still a lot.

Does anyone think that, say, a cab driver will now actually "be on the lookout" for, essentially, any random large man and do what exactly? Call the cops saying that there are three like that outside this bar, and two more across the street waiting for the bus, and one just exited the subway statiion at Christopher Street...oops, three more exiting the Lutheran church.

I never thought BOLO's worked at all. The only things that work are sketches and then maybe (rarely) someone might recognize a neighbor or aquaintance and turn them in.

How have I lost? Is race not disclosed through the picture??? Just answer that and please stop with the what ifs regarding radio....you've linked us to a BOLO article/news report where race is clearly, indisputably disclosed.

So the ethics of journalism say that race, disability, etc should not be identified unless it is pertinent to the story.

So if you're writing about a guy who opened a local Chili's franchise, it does not change the story to say he's black/white/asian/latino so you should leave it out.

IMO, the journalist who did this did it all wrong. It was completely NOT pertinent that the victim was Australian, and absolutely pertinent that the suspect was black.

It's not disclosed. It might be deduced. Just as his age might be deduced, but his age is stated in the BOLO.

Answer this question: What possible motive is there to not include the suspect's race in the description of the suspect?

Once upon a time we knew things like this. Evidently we no longer have this knowledge.

I actually think the guy from New York (see above) is onto something. The people broadcasting these BOLOS do not regard them as something that will produce any results. They are just constantly running info, and this is one of the things they run. So, they go all PC so nobody says anything to them about race issues, and they move on to the next story.

I hear what you're saying about BOLO's being effective, but that's another matter altogether. Frankly I can't imagine BOLO's produce many results, unless it's in an area where a stranger's presence would be noticed.

But if the BOLO is going to be released it should include all pertinent information such as age, race, height, weight and, if known, any distinguising marks or scars.

There's absolutely no legitimate reason not to include any of that information. It's PC BS run amuck at the expense of public safety.

I can't think of any BOLO reports I've ever read that didn't include race (outside of this one).

Pretty sure the people who make that show put a little more effort into helping find the perps than your local news radio station who tells everybody that suspect of the bank robbery that just happened is 6 feet all.

My point was that the concept works.
