Care to explain this?
Back in the heyday of record companies having all the power, artists received very little money on CD sales and radio plays. In fact, it was not uncommon for very popular and successful bands to actually end up in debt to record companies because of their shady practices.
However, thanks to the internet, media production, promotion, etc have been democratized, and now many artists make more money touring and selling associated merchandise (t-shirts, etc.) while essentially giving away their music. It's a changing paradigm, and it's is turning the tide in the favor of content producers.
All thanks to pirate activity.
