I'm not completely sure, to be honest.
As one that has read the first four books, I can say that the show is good, but it's no where naer as good as the books.

It's an epic fantasy somewhat akin to a hard core Lord of the Rings. The first 3 books it is based on are well written with very interesting plots and characters. The TV show is consistent with the books for the most part with an excellent cast and actually improves on the books in some cases. The problem of course as with most TV series is that they don't have the budget to make the show as epic as depicted in the books.
