I doubt he spent 16 years in naval special warfare and came out an e-6.
If you look a few posts up I factored in bah and a bunch of other shite to get a ballpark on what he might have been making.

Damn, single life in Germany making that much sounds pretty nice
I'm plannning on getting out in a couple of years and going to college but I would definitely be down to come back in as an officer under the right circumstances.
Good luck on getting back in the pipeline. I know from personal experience how much getting injured sucks.

I'm definitely intrested in other services.
My main two criteria:
I still wanna be in an operations role, and I wanna travel.
I honestly just don't know that much about AFSOC other than the cct's we've had with us. I'm interested though, dropping bombs is fricking sexy
Honestly I'm leaning towards the Navy but I haven't even come close to researching it enough to make an informed decision.

I forget how different the "E" scale and "O" scale can be at times. My Dad was Navy 23 years and retired at Commander. He was making damn near 6 figures by that point.

Don't have time to read the article now, but does it mention why he's leaving after 16 years instead of staying for his pension? If he's not up to the grind anymore, there are less demanding jobs he could transition into for a few years. And if he has physical issues, he should be able to get some disability help from the VA after he leaves active duty.
