Just finished it!! Good stuff, was just telln my wife over the weekend the one thing i wish i would have done was been in the service. This type of stuff is so interresting to me, but for every hero like this one is another man who died trying.. And thats what separates "us" from those who actually do it!

I have very mixed feelings about all this. On one hand I can see why these guys would come forward with this story, to get rich..to be famous...on the other hand, if they wanted money and fame they signed up for the wrong business. The movie, the book....I think that stuff is horse shite that comes at the expense of their families and I think it's incredibly selfish.
All of this with the exception of the shooter of course. He should be allowed to finish his 20 if only for doing the honorable thing and not coming forward. I respect what all of these men have done for their country and their sacrifices for this country but I can understand why the military wouldn't exactly be keen on keeping them around....

The author basically identifies himself as not the shooter. He also doesn't name anyone's names. So that article states they know 1 person on the raid
eta: talking about the book and the article posted about the author. Not the unnamed shooter article

Gotta do 20 if you want that check. You cant get out early and expect benefits. If he was forced out then it had to be medically and if so he would get some benefits depending in his condition. I doubt he was kicked out for negative performance.

Haven't read the story, but the excerpts posted so far are golden.
There's absolutely no way to really judge this situation without knowing why this man would get out with under 4 years left to retirement. Unless he's entertaining some pretty lucrative offers that require his immediate attention, looks like a dumb move (if elective).

I'm agreeing with navytiger here.
I doubt this guy was forced out after 16 years. The negative push back on that would be tremendous. The navy would have just kept him in doing nothing rather than kicking him out.
My guess is he thought he was going to get paid big time when he left, and that didn't seem to happen. Maybe it still will, but it seems like he made a horrible decision.
He had 4 more years and should have finished it out.
So, the guy knew he needed to stay in for 20 to get those benefits, left four years early because he thought he was going to get paid privately, that isn't happening, and now he wants the government to pay him anyway?
What does the guy want? A pension? Needed four more years. He wants a high paying job doing what? Unless he is injured, he could do consulting and training I suppose. But he may have to move/travel/be overseas for this.

4 more years may have killed him. hell, one more mission may have killed him. he clearly didn't want to push his luck anymore...he had lived through what he surely thought would be his last one and he had enough. sad there is no special compensation for these guys

The government's failure to meet its dutiful obligations to veterans is an abysmal stain on our national character. That's been the case regardless of who was president and/or controlled the Congress. If Americans were as motivated by this wrong as they are by some of these other, trivial-by-comparison issues like the birthers, capital gains taxes, etc., maybe something would get done.

Possible. We don't know what his options were for orders. That's a missing piece. I think it unlikely that he couldn't have found non-operational roles for his last 1-2 assignmetns, but I guess it's possible.
