Let me clarify my statement concerning the probability of the next pope being black. Simply, there was a lot of pressure from a populist stand point before BXVI became pope for a black cardinal to be voted into the seat of Peter. This move would likely go over very well in the continents of Africa and South America.

Obviously Obama is the next pope then. The Vatican controls when the end of the world happens since they hold the original and complete Grand Grimoire, which is the most powerful book known to man and is said to be able to raise Satan himself. Has been locked in the Secret Archives of the Vatican since the Middle Ages.

I didn't know this but I looked it up and it appears to be correct. Pope Gregory XII was the last pope to resign in 1415.

Really, idiot?
quote:
During his papacy and in the years prior, Benedict was a key figure in the church's efforts to address widespread instances of sexual abuse of children by priests. In 2001, then-Cardinal Ratzinger convinced John Paul II to put the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which he led, in charge of investigating cases and setting policy regarding what he termed "filth" in the church. As a cardinal, Ratzinger pushed through important reforms, including making Internet offenses against children a violation covered by canon law, extending child abuse offenses to include the sexual abuse of all under 18, waiving of the statute of limitation and speeding the process of dismissing guilty priests.

According to the prophecy. Which has been wildly inaccurate. For instance, no one can correlate Pope Benedict with the "prophecy".
quote:
Gloria olivæ The Benedictine order traditionally said this Pope would come from their order, since a branch of the Benedictine order is called the Olivetans. St Benedict is said to have prophesied that before the end of the world, a member of his order would be Pope and would triumphantly lead the Church in its fight against evil. While the Holy Father chose the name "Benedict", this does not seem enough to fulfil the prophecy. Nor is it clear how Benedict XVI (a Bavarian) is "Glory of the Olives". Since he is said to have remarked in the Conclave after saying he would take the name Benedict that it was partly to honour Benedict XV, a pope of peace and reconciliation, perhaps Benedict XVI will be a peacemaker in the Church or in the World, and thus carry the olive branch.

Among the media and the world population, yes. You have to remember, the College of Cardinals votes in complete and total isolation. They are locked in the Sistine Chapel without cell phones, without computers, without any form of communication whatsoever and stay in there until they elect a pope. Many of them abstained from watching the news and reading the newspapers in the days after John Paul II's death for fear of being unduly influenced by the media. At the time Ratzinger seemed like the obvious choice because he was said to be John Paul II's right hand man. Clearly he wasn't as strong of a leader as his predecessor was and I am glad that he is stepping down. The Catholic Church needs new leadership, someone who will take a stand against the culture of corruption that has become inherent in Rome.

Can't tell. Vegas announced 1000-1 odds on Bono getting the nod. And this may be the one position for which Nick Saban would leave Alabama.

Just to give some perspective on how ultra rare this is. There have now been only five popes who have abdicated the papacy in the 2,000 years since St. Peter started the line of pontiffs. Pope John XVIII (abdicated in 1009) Pope Benedict IX (abdicated in 1045) Pope Celestine V (abdicated in 1292) Pope Gregory XII (abdicated in 1415) Pope Benedict XVI (abdicates in 2013) Whether you're an atheist, Protestant, Roman Catholic, or Roman Catholic hater - this is some serious history that is about to go down in Rome.
