Ridiculous waste of life. I had my .license when I was 15 and was never, ever allowed to be out at that time of night even if I wasn't driving. My mom always stayed up until I got home and if I was late I had better of called and said why or I was grounded with no car.

I'm just wondering for the sake of argument, at what point has a parent done all he/she can do? I know that we've taught and talked and preached and talked some more and STILL talk to our kids, now 20, 15 and 12 (well she will be on Thursday). My kids don't leave the house without us reminding them to mind their manners and remember right from wrong. Even when the 20 yo is home from LSU and on his way out I remind him to "be smart". We've said all we can and we keep saying it BUT at what point is it not the parents' fault anymore? If we've done right in our teachings and my child decides to sneak out of the house, does that make me a bad parent? My parents were good parents .. taught me right from wrong and I still made bonehead decisions. I'm asking as the KATC fb page is blowing up with "bad parents" ... I just don't know.

if you did your job right starting when your kids were babies, then you usually don't have trouble when they're older. If your 20 yr-old has never been to jail, expelled from school, been arrested, gotten a DWI/MIP, or gotten a girl pregnant, then chances are, you probably did you job. I think the problem is people think they can start disciplining their kids AFTER these things have happened, and by then, it's too late.

Hadn't had any of that happen although he did have 1 run in with a cop ... but his friend was driving and I think that scared the CRAP out of him (he was 19). I'm thinking we did our job BUT don't assume it SO reminders all the way around when they're on their way out. I feel for the parents of all involved in this situation.

From KATC. Yeah, I was surprised to see those charges so soon.

My oldest is a senior in HS and they just got done with the Junior/senior "wars". TPing houses, wrapping Saran Wrap around each others cars and shite like that. Made for some tense nights. You never know when someone will think they are breaking into vehicles and start shooting. Do you tell them they cant go? We did similar and worse. That's terrible for all involved

91, the wife and I have been talking about this unfortunate story. Here is how easy it is for things to go badly: your 15 yr old has 2 friends over to spend the night and play Xbox or whatever. Parents check in on them until midnight then go to sleep. Boys sneak out and take the truck at 1 am. The rest is history.

Abolsutely. There ARE "bad parents" who do NO parenting and set no example but there sure are "good parents" who teach/talk/set examples and then there are "oblivious parents" who talk a little and are good people but assume kids know right from wrong and don't need any reinforcement. At some point I truly don't think you can blame the parents for things (I'm saying this in general; I know nothing about these people/this situation). It's a decision that the kids made though ... their parents or the parents of the "host" kid may have very well done a "good job" and taught them all the right things. All I know is that 4 sets of parents are all grieving/hurting .. for different reasons.

it's tough to imagine what they could be doing to get into an argument with a homeowner on his property in the middle of the night
