Ok I've read the book twice and seen the movie more times than I can count.
I'm still not sure if the murders truly happened or If it was all just fantasies in Bateman's head. I've always leaned towards they did happen and he wasn't caught because everyone is too caught up in fashion, money etc. and not the actual person. No one truly knows anyone else.
But, a couple of things kinda screw with that theory. When he dragged the body through the lobby, you see a trail of blood at first, then a few seconds later you see the trail is gone. Also, when he shoots the cop car with a pistol and it explodes,I didn't understand that.
Thoughts?

I think he did kill the hobo and the hooker....the less noticeables.
I think the high consequence kills were imagined.

it's supposed to be ambiguous. I think bret easton ellis has said as much.

All I want to know is what he did to those hookers with the coat hanger.

I think he did kill all those people. The reason why is because the movie is set up to show is how self involved people can be. How that part of society looks alike, dresses alike, acts alike, etc.... So if the murders didn't happen, then the point of the movies is void. At least that's my thought.

Exactly.
That's what the real point of it all. He has a water-tight alibi and it's all predicated by inattentiveness due to self-absorbtion of all parties.

i've never read the book, but in the movie when he goes back to Paul Allen's place and the real estate lady is there selling the house, why is she all like "you need to leave and never return" in a real creepy way if it wasn't real?
oh and I wasn't saying you specifically were saying it wasn't real, just replying to the thread in general

The real estate lady knew what happened there, but if anyone else found out, then bam, there goes commssion on an obvious high dollar place. Which goes back to selfishness and self absorbed society. That part was a little out there for me as far as realism, but it sticks to the main theme

The movie wasn't supposed to be realistic. It's a satire of late-80s yuppie culture.

I know, read my first post.

The whole point IMO is that you never know. He could have killed these people and then this perfect alibi appears for him or he could have know that Paul Allen was in London and imagined that he murdered him and created the alibi.

this. thank you. he could have killed paul allen, or he could be in london. The lawyer didn't even know that Bateman was Bateman, so how could we know if it was really Paul Allen in london? The movie does a great job of making it COMPLETELY ambiguous.
i am of the same school of thought of Rondo, that he carried out the reasonable murders.

I love when he is talking about not using alcohol because it ages the face and when he's talking about Huey Lewis.
