Because they've paid into it? THe better question is why does someone that has never contributed a dime deserve SS at all?

OPs like this confirm that liberals think money belongs to the state, and there should be redistribution of wealth above everything. They do not understand nor care about the American experiment.

Liberals have a problem distinguishing the word "deserved" from the word(s) "EARNED" and "paid for".

Liberals barely even understand what the word "earned" even means. Far as they're concerned, people who've "earned" stuff have largely been the beneficiaries of "luck".

If they paid in to the system then they should get money back out. This was set up as a forced retirement system. To not get you little money back out, then it becomes another wealth distribution tax....

it is a wealth distribution tax and what you put in is irrelevant for the most part want an example? think about what happens when a 45 year old who has contributed for 28 years dies as a single person with no kids. who gets his contributions?

If SS was originally set up by a private citizen he would be in jail for ponsi/pyramid scheme. SS is already means tested. My mother turned 65 last and has worked ALL her life and her check is only slightly more than her sister's, who was a stay at home mom/wife for most of her life. SS is the biggest form of wealth redistribution ever created.

ONLY because when it was set up, woman staying at home was the norm and they were then given (and still do get) the benefit of their husband's contribution. THIS is one of the big reasons for the gay marriage proponents -- yet another drain on the social security system.

Did the govt. take money out of his earned income to pay for the program over his lifes work? Does the SS laws excuse from paying into the system as he was making too much money during that span of time? If he isn't eligible then you have stolen money from him and his family for years under the umbrella of the govt.

I will give another personal example. My ex-wife's father died at the age of 20 when she was 2 years old. Her mother re-married a year or 2 later, but my ex-wife received SS benefits for 16 years because the step father did not adopt her. It is very safe to say she received more in benefits than her father paid into the system.

Mr. Smith, a wealthy retired businessman worth millions, has no business receiving social security funds.
Well then he should not pay into it. Why don't you want people to receive back the money they pay into something? Social Security was supposed to be a guarantee against financial hardships, when the stock market was unstable. Now, SS is a guarantee that you will never see that money you put in, if you are 45 or younger. The problem isn't "rich people" receiving SS. The problem is government laundering money through SS. Scrap it all together. Completely phase out SS. I will be willing to sacrifice all i've paid into the program, if i could stop paying in tomorrow. ETA: Not directed at you, Hail. Noticed you are posting NY times comments.
