I like Phil, and I think a lot of the hate from his peers is jealousy. He has so much talent, yet he consistently blew opportunities to win the big one. I think he lost respect from his peers by choking so many times. I think his PGA Tour playing partners felt that if they had his talent, they would have won 10 majors.
Now having said that, I understand that some of you think his persona is fake. I don't think it's 100% fake, I just think he behaves that way public because he wants to be the fan's player. I think he does whatever he feels will endear him to the fans the most. It's like Chris Farley felt like he had to be the life of every party because "that's what he does", so Phil thinks he has to be super nice to the fans because "that's what he does".

I don't know what it is about Phil, I have had no personal contact with him, don't know how he is as a person, just never have liked him.
Maybe it's because he has the body of a 60 year old woman half the time?
