The fact that you guys (and the media) use the term "drones" tells me that you don't really understand what they are. UAVs are not "drones". They aren't AI. They have a pilot. He just operates the thing remotely from a room instead of from a cockpit. How is that different functionally different from a pilot operating a chopper overhead. When we have a bunch of fully automated drones, I'll work on my outrage.
We have AI drones now buddy. I use marine variants in my research, and a quick google shows they already have the aerial variety. DARPA a couple years ago finished a funding request for ground drones too. UAVs, drones, etc. are all a problem when it comes to violation of civil liberties, champ. The fact you harp on a minor, and interestingly inconsequential difference shows once again your "conservative" nature....just like the "independent" TenTex.

So the only advantage to UAVs is the guy is in a building in Nevada, versus a cockpit deployed?
No. When did I say that. I said that they are both "piloted". That means that there's a human in the loop for both--so what's the big deal?
quote:
Why don't you just enlighten me on your indepth knowledge of UAVs?
How about I don't. If you have a specific question that I can address without saying more than I should, I'll consider it. If there's something you want to say about UAVs that refutes my point, don't be coy. Out with it.

You are correct a guy in Nevada or North Dakota is in the loop.

AI drones are not what the article in question is talking about. The technology to deploy these drones on anything resembling a complicated mission is not there yet. I'm sure it'll get there, but it's a ways off.

They're tools like everything else made by man. They can be used for good or abused.

FOr one, the UAV pilot has less to do with operation of the drone than a person in a cockpit would...not much different, but there is more automation. Second, studies have shown a disconnect between the areas of the brain that are stimulated and the response of UAV operators versus pilots in firing weapon. Specifically psychological responses to having fired their armaments. this has been conducted with both exist interviews and with brain imaging. But you already know both of those things.

once again, you are harping on a slight misnomer in an attempt to discredit the thread. It is another use of a logical fallacy by you. A common occurrence in your posts btw.

Really? We send our AI robots down thousands of feet, have them perform comples surveys, return to their cage for charging and download/upload, then start the next survey. We have had this technology for over 15 years. I'll go out on a limb and say that an aerial drone doing the same with a camera is already done and operational champ.

Our government has a history of civil rights abuse, specifically concerning privacy in the last decade.

yet another attempt to discredit an argument without presenting contrary information. Keep swinging though!

IIRC we had a report concerning this very issue concerning Pred operators.

I'd be curious to see this as I've always heard that the correlation is more towards being in the line of fire/danger as opposed to the firing of weapons.

Oh really. Turning on a camera and programming some waypoints into a fightpath does not make an sophisticated, truly automated drone make. You seem to know enough about the subject to know what I mean. I didn't suggest that the technology wasn't being worked on. I said it's a ways off. We don't have currenty have anything operational that is meaningfully automated and capable of undertaking the types of missions that should concern people and we likely won't for some many years.

I wasn't discrediting your argument. You made some fair points about the differences between a manned and remote-piloted craft. I was just telling you to lighten up with all of your "he's a dirty liar" talk. ETA: Qualifier on drone definition.

1) This paper completely destroys Navy's bull shite "no automation" lie LINK 2) LINK There are more articles on the effects of "whiplash transition", "increased risk of PTSD", Increased risk of mental breakdown, and lower training time and faster teaching time. Start a google scholar search for UAV and psychological. A host of things should start coming up.

Yeeeah, I have a serious problem with allowing all of these local law enforcement jurisdictions to use drones at their disposal.....just think about the possibilities of misuse. I think states where their legislatures are moving to ban or severely restrict their use is a good thing and I applaud them for standing up before this shite gets out of hand....
