Good defense is a dinosaur in the NFL

So last night showed me more than anything how dead defense is in the NFL. Those were two supposedly solid defenses and they looked pathetic at times. Now there are reasons for this. Let's face it, QBs are getting better and WRs are getting better. And DBS are not. That alone is evident. I don't know how anyone could have stopped that first AB TD catch. It was too perfect.

However, two things the NFL can do very quickly that will get us all back to a state of defense we recognize and remember form not too long ago.

1. Make players tackle. This forearm shove shite needs to die. It started with the DBs way back in the 80's and has now moved on to everyone. Last night I saw two form tackles. One by Patrick Willis and one on KO coverage on Jacoby Jones. Both were stop them in their tracks hits. If Defensive coordinators and the NFL would just make a real effort to get players to tackle with their lower bodies and wrap up, defense would get instantly better and those head injuries and safety concerns would drop off as well.

2. Holding on offense has gotten out of hand. I realize that defensive lineman have a huge advantage over o-lineman anyway, but there has to be a limit with the holding. I could run around the end if I had a tackle holding the shite out of the DE every time. Do all these sports goobs even take that into consideration when going on and on about how these running QBs are changing the game?

Meh, Baltimore played great on d for a half, and the niners played great D for a half. Both teams have explosive players that are impossible to defend at times. It was an exciting game.

Watch Jacoby Jones kickoff return. One of the 49er defenders was double teamed very near the seam that Jones ran through. I guess in a double team, no rules apply because the guy was straight up bear hugged by one of the Raven players as part of the double team. Both arms completely around with two handfuls of jersey. None of that "inside the frame" stuff that is normally allowed.

I'm not griping about the outcome, cause I didn't care who won, but we all know that holding happens on every play. That was probably just another case of the hold being missed, as opposed to a ref seeing it and letting it go.

You mean in the late 70's or so? What specifically are you referring to.

I'm well aware of the "Ty Law" rule. It was also a rule that had been in place since 1979. They just decided to enforce it more.

I don't see what that has to do with shitty tackling.

i'm on board with everyone who said "rule change"?

that's much more of an issue. this is a QB/WR league now and it doesn't mean DB's are worse.

seems the rules on hitting and teaching proper technique are going through some growing pains. I did not see a lot of fundemental tackling, those don't make the highlight reel.

Seriously, most people think that is a new rule and not one that has been around since the 70's. It really is just an excuse for playing crappy defense. Stuff like what happened last night and why the Broncos are sitting home has nothing to do with the Ty Law rule.

I was really trying to get at stuff that was within the defenses control as well as stuff the refs are letting the offense get away with.

I believe that teams can play good defense and still adhere to the Ty Law rule which is really the Mel Blount rule. But not without tackling technigue, DE technique, and letting the o-line get away with so much.

Well maybe if the Broncos could have bumped Jacoby beyond the 5-yard mark the bomb doesn't happen
