Need to get one for backpacking now that I'm graduating to multi night hikes. I don't do anything crazy with it, just need to boil water for a freeze dried meal and coffee in the mornings. Need something relatively compact. Looked at the Jetboil for $99. Anyone have experience with it, or an alternate they'd recommend? Thanks!

They make one you attach to a 1lb coleman propane cylinder. Works great.

That's pretty wild, wonder how well it heats water with a small open flame

Not sure, but probably about as good as any packable stove. You definitely want light and not bulky.

I was just watching an old kayaking video I made back in the id 90's. We carried the smallest stove available and it's huge compared to what they have today. Lots of really light, small products out there right now.

Why don't you just build your own?

If you just want to boil water and cook freeze dried food- go with the jet boil. Compact and lightweight and will boil water in a couple minutes. Also, you can do this safely in yor duck/deer blind. With the fuel in canisters, no risk of spilling liquid fuel in your pack. Also, go with the Mountain House freeze dried meals.

 Swiss Volcano Bottle Stove-Camping -Hiking-Survival-fishing
This USED Swiss Ranger Volcano stove set is constructed of lightweight aluminum weighing a mere 15 ounces. The set contains an insulated bottle with a cork lid, winged handle canteen cup, and a wing handled vented stove. Place a fuel source or Tinder the stove and heat the bottle or cup to warm liquids, MRE's, or soup. This is a must-have for emergencies.
