Shooting steel targets

I got some steel coming in from Arntzen. The steel plates I was using wasn't going to hold up long, I guess it needs to be hardened. Don't want to end up like this guy.
I would really like to shoot rifles at them. What are some ammo to avoid. I've shot 22lr, 9mm, and 357mag at steel and the bullets end up as little tiny discs of lead on the ground under the targets.
Shot my 243 at it at 100 yards and went straight through
. It is 1/2" stainless plate.
Just don't want ricochets coming back at me.

If like to make a target like that one day.

Stay away from full metal jacket so that means it will be more expensive.

I friend of mine is a welder. He made some plates out of 5/16" in steel. They worked damn good for everything from 9 mil to 300 weatherby

They weren't as much as I thought.
Didn't get the 28"gong like Hickok

Yes,
One video he mentioned another brand but can't remember it.

Good enough for him, good enough for me.

Most steel shooters use AR500 steel, the 500 being the brinel rating.
I buy from shootsteel and have had great success. Startup cost is pretty significant (mine was around $400 for the stands, holders, and plates) but it's worth every penny.
Mine were shot with a 300 Win Mag. It knocked the whole thing over but the target had a very tiny dent. That was all. It will take pistol and regular rifle rounds (5.56 and .308) all day long.

I'm using the shepherds hook plant hangers from Lowes. $7 per target stand.

Take a picture of your set up and post if you don't mind. I'm going to make one one weekend.

That works.
I would suggest you buy the plates from Shoot Steel though. They will outlive you.

I'm coming shoot it after you finish it

Just imagine one of the 16" round Arntzen targets hanging from a plant hanger. Thats it.

They are both AR500 steel. And the Arntzen are a little cheaper for the same sizes.

Hell yeah. After this turnaround is done, I'll have time.
