I have never not given money to a beggar. I'm sure I have been scammed quite a few times but I figure if i'm ever in the shite that bad I might need help myself.

almost never...I will pretty readily buy food for someone, though...they will usually ask for money for food or gas and I simply say, "I don't give away money, but let's go and get you some gasoline or food...you can usually tell very quickly whether they are really in need or not at that point...I have never had anyone take me up on buying them some gas for their vehicle that is supposedly stranded on the highway...
I do on occasion buy food for someone if I get the feeling that they are really in need...

They could go to a church or ask a cop for help if they really needed it. Most of them are either crazy or addicted to alcohol, drugs, or both. I've bought them food before, and called social workers to help, but only given cash a couple of times.

For food, yes? And if they can live off the dollar menu for a while and save something it would go along way.

My tipping point was when I gave a guy a ride home and at the end when I dropped him off, he had the audacity to ask for 5 bucks.

Yep. They didn't get homeless and destitute overnight.
That's not to say that they don't need help or that they should be ignored, but that none of them are only $5 away from success.

Never. I don't pity beggars.
I employ temp laborers almost daily on construction projects that pay the workers the same day they work. There is no excuse for an able bodied person to beg for money when they can easily earn it.

I'm no taxi driver but I always thought you owe the person driving you not the passenger getting paid by the driver.
