I've twice brewed a bourbon-barrel porter, and neither time was I able to get much in the way of carbonation to take hold. I kegged 90% of the first batch and bottled the rest. Kegged 100% of the second batch. The bottles from the first batch were flat as water, and the kegged batches had a little fizz but not much. I wonder if there is something in either the bourbon or the oak chips that inhibit carbonation?
Either way, the stuff is delicious, especially when its a little cooler outside.
