To be fair, a child born to a single mother today is not necessarily considered immoral.
So you can't really correlate out-of-wedlock births with immorality.

Unlike some of my non-believing brethren, I really do support children being born to two devoted, if not married, parents. However, I would also say that children being born out of wedlock isn't the true foundation of whatever moral decline we may or may not be experiencing. I mean, if you look at society as a whole the moral landscape of today blows the past 50-100 years out of the water. Less than a century ago we were still having publicly, and legally, sponsored lynchings. Racism was a legitimate problem rather than a punchline. Shit, if you're taking a traditionalist view, just look at the entire 60's and 70's. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Aside from that, I'd like to see statistics focused on the effect of dysfunctional families, particularly those that "stick it out together." What kind of figures would we be looking at, what kind of impact does it have on the children of those families? How often does the cycle perpetuate itself?
The issue isn't whether you're born in or out of wedlock, it's whether you're born into a loving family or a dysfunctional one. Wedlock childbearing is more likely a corollary factor rather than a causative one. JMO.

this kind of illustrates why people say we're morally bankrupt
one thing that has risen for sure is people having babies without being married. that is indisputable
MY question is why this is considered immoral? what societal basis was there for people to have babies with their partner? what was trying to be reduced by pushing this?
second line of questioning is what negative effects on society can be demonstrated from this behavior?
my presumption is this behavior should have never been "immoral" in the first place, or at least shouldn't be considered "immoral" in a society that can absorb this behavior

Having two parents is best, all else equal, but kids are going to be better off in a single parent, loving household than a dual parent dysfunctional one. The single parent is often not the true cause of the problems. It's lack of income, which leads to bad neighborhoods and bad schools.

Back in the day, children born out of wedlock had no right to inherit, nor any claim on their father's estate. Not so today.
