quote:

I'm talking about when growing the economy overrides all other considerations

No one takes action with the mindset 'this will grow the economy!'.

People use their various means to meet their prioritized ends. The cumulative result of these actions is economic growth and a greater reflection of individual needs and preferences.

Maybe not individually, but I've seen presidents emplore citizens to just go out and buy stuff. Bthe Clinton and Bush did this.

I'm sorry if you don't see it, but I remember when there used to be a term, "conspicuous consumption". Now the activity that term used to criticize is the norm, and actually praised.

Consumption is an addiction in this country, and it's recognized as such the world over.

The Boy has not yet become a Man.
Ours is an Infantile culture.
Of course it's PERFECT for infantle boys who can not discern the difference between the sacred and profane, the banal and the distinctive, the profound and the ordinary.

I can't explain to a chimp why an expertly-prepared 7 course meal is superior to a banana that has been inserted in one's arse prior to eating. It's my fault for trying here.

That is ALL economists and politicians care about.

"Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell."
- Edward Abbey

Both parties are tied to the infinite growth paradigm. In a decade or two, we're going to have to change how money works, because growth won't be possible. I don't know what happens then, but I think it will be ugly for most of us.

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

quote:

that's how we advance as a society

That's the misperception.
quote:

growing our economic efficiencies and strength is the means to development

"Economic efficiencies"

What in the world is efficient about how we consume resources?

We are still running a cold war economy. We are still in the mindset that we must outgrow our adversary and therefore 'win' - even though we don't really have economic adversaries anymore.

I'm not pointing out anything that isn't recognozed by most people not living in our culture.

yeah watching a documentary without any sex in it (there were a few boobies) about porn stars after they leave porn is just wasteful and without intellectual merit. making assumptions about them is better, i presume?

what is sacred and profane changes

we are becoming a less formal society IN GENERAL. go look at pictures of men in soup kitchen lines from the depression. they're all in suits and hats. do you wear a suit and hat every day? so profane! how can you celebrate the decline in what is sacred DAILY?!?!?!

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

quote:

That's the misperception.

no that's reality

we can only advance if we have excess resources

we only have excess resources when our economy is advancing. that's been the basic concept of society since we formed communities around agriculture

quote:

What in the world is efficient about how we consume resources?

we only consume resources because we're that advanced. it's a good thing

if we didn't consume things, there wouldn't be demand for things and there would be no incentive to develop better products to compete for that resource allocation

quote:

We are still in the mindset that we must outgrow our adversary and therefore 'win'

there are only so many resources in the world, so yes. we must compete and develop...and use that to develop more. and more. and more

if peak oil is correct then our society will collapse and we'll devolve a couple hundred years and we will never likely reach this peak again. there isn't really anything we can do about it, just like if the sun crapped out on us

yes, really

just because you refuse to accept that as a decline doesn't mean it isn't so. you refuse to accept it because of your perception bias and lack of objectivity. you see yourself as too moral/stable and refuse to realize how much your own persona symbolizes our society's path to casual (which is a rejection of societal formality that you are advocating)

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

quote:

no that's reality

No, instead of the betterment of society being a by-product of growth, we should have profit being a by-product of the betterment of society.
quote:

we only consume resources because we're that advanced

You're just pulling bits and pieces out. I didn't say we shouldn't consume resources, I said we do it INEFFICIENTLY.
quote:

if we didn't consume things

Why do you think we shouldn't consume resources?
quote:

there are only so many resources in the world, so yes. we must compete and develop

What??? You think we have the right to consume other nations' resources at prices we deem fair?
Are you really justifying us being the most obese society on the planet? Do we really need to compete for other's hydrocarbon resources so we can continue to transport ourselves about in an incredibly inefficient manner?

It's all around you, you just want to justify our overconsumption and greed. Look what it costs us to maintian the oil resources of the ME. We can't afford it. It would be more cost effective o develop our own resources and more efficient methods of using these resources. Then we could sell these methods for profit. That would be having profit as a by-product of the goal of the betterment of society.

I've written similar post and so have others, and invariably, the vast majority will come on here and say you are nuts and our modern era is the zenith of all existence since the beginning of time. And if you name a time period that was more civil, they'll just tell you it was a racist period filled with women haters. You won't win this one with this crowd. But I agree with your observations and it gives me some hope for future generations.

And there it is in a nitshell, the nihilism of our culture.

I don't want any part of that sort of thinking.
