I'm 22 years old and agree with everything you just said. It makes me sick to see how this country is today.
I think social media and 24/7 news stations have amplified the appearance of everything being totally fricked.. Things like violent crime and rape are lower than they used to be, so in some areas we are improving as a society. I just feel like individualism and personal accountability are the two areas in fast decline.

doesn't mean they are, either. I'm not sure who exactly you are talking about, really. Maybe you just live in a really shitty place.

Most 'trashy' people I encounter pay lip-service to their religion, but are either ignorant or careless as to it's mandates. The non-religious that I know tend to be better behaved and better educated. So, I do not think that a lack of religion is responsible for moral decay. I blame the role of the state in molding individuals who are unable to think critically or to be self-sustaining. It is much easier to hoodwink a nation of thoughtless and undirected morons who are spoon-fed their opinions than it is those who understand how wealth is generated and how material abundance comes to be.

What do you think has caused this?
IMO it is a combination of increased vulgarity on t.v., the lack of teaching morality and manners to younger children in schools, the increased acceptance of divorces and single parents, and the romanticizing of people just being trash, rather than looking down upon it. (shows like Jersey Shore, for example).

The morality of our countrymen has been watered down over the years. Intentionally, I'm afraid. Russell Kirk sums up the basics:
quote:
A society in which men and women are governed by belief in an enduring moral order, by a strong sense of right and wrong, by personal convictions about justice and honor, will be a good society—whatever political machinery it may utilize; while a society in which men and women are morally adrift, ignorant of norms, and intent chiefly upon gratification of appetites, will be a bad society—no matter how many people vote and no matter how liberal its formal constitution may be.

No, just no. Do they ever cuss? Do you see sexual acts on that show? You see a functional, working class family with values doing what they love to do. Just because they are on the "redneck" side does not make them trash.

People said the same about the youth and their loud rock music in the 60's. I'd say most of those kids grew up to be decent people.
Maybe. People see changes and don't like it, and that will never change. I will say people seem more needy and dependent. Not all of the changes we have seen are bad though, IMO. Everyone thinks their values are superior though, and I can't really blame them for that.

so why are things like teen pregnancy and violent crime on a major downward spiral the past 25 years or so?

I disagree. Violent crime has been decreasing for well over a decade, and we enjoy greater material abundance than ever before. Technological and medicinal innovation continue to surge. Simply because undesirable and culturally questionable things are profitable and profligate does not mean that society is going down the shitter.

We have just reached critical mass with Cultural Stupidity. Or should I say AmeriKKKA iz 2Stoopid4me ? It is pretty much safe to assume that the person you are talking to is functionally illiterate and completely, blissfully unaware of anything beyond their tiny, little pop-culture world. FB, Twitter, porn, reality tv,low information voters...it's just utterly vapid. One really has to SEEK these days to ELEVATE. You have to wade through fifty guys like SFP watching midget porn to find one guy who has willingly read a book in the last year. It's not readily available and it's certainly not valued. In fact,to admit to a desire to ELEVATE is basically seen as opting out of the culture by The Idiotarians.

if you're going to make comments like this, then you need to define what trash is

Their behavior is not the thing to be laughed at. It's the fact that folks watch the quasi-scripted lives of other people. It's voyeurism and/or escapism in television form.

Pregnancy is likely due to birth control and abortion being an option. And abortion is terribly wrong. Violent Crime? I'd have to see a link to believe that
