1. Whatever the USSC determines the Commere Clause and Taxing Clause to cover on that day. 2. You can respect the ideals of the constitution and not it's current interpretation.

We are no longer the Republic we were originally and we've never been a democracy. We've turned into a hybrid. Wiki explains it here quote:
A democratic republic is a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is a state in which, theoretically, ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens. The United States was founded as a Republic, and has evolved to be a Democratic Republic via amendment changes such as the 17th amendment. In 1789 only 6% of the US population could vote. In 1790, only white males could vote. It wasn't until 1856 when the final state of North Carolina removed land ownership as a requirement to vote. In 1869, male former slaves were granted citizenship and the right to vote with the 14th amendment, and bolstered with the 15th amendment in 1870. It wasnt' until 1920 that the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. The United states was originally a representative republic in which democratic representation was not an original part of. The US has further evolved into a more representative democracy as a form of a republic nation.
It is wiki but that's always been my understanding.

Nah. It's not even that complicated. Republic (Latin Res Publica meaning "the public thing") are societies whose governments are bound by law - meaning law supercedes the individual or collective decisions of government officials. Democracy (Greek Demos Kratos meaning people's power) is a society whose government is run and rules are determined by a majority of the people eligible to vote.

I have 2 simple answers. 1. The limits are the SCOTUS' interpretation of the limits set forth in the Constitution. 2. I'm not following your question. Define "respect". All rights contained in the Bill of Rights have to an extent limitations carved out by 220 years of jurisprudence. The SCOTUS established their tests and theoretically hey should be consistent, which of course they're not. You can respect or disrespect whatever you choose.

Very interesting perspective. You have any suggested reading on this? I never really put that together. Would love to read up on it.

Te left would have you believe the Constitution is outdated; and consequently, some of it can be overlooked or abused depending on the opinion of the day. The problem is the Constitution is there to establish order and teh Bill of rights is there to limit what the govt. can do and to protect individual rights against the state. So unless your speech is inciting a riot, it can not be limited even if a majority say to do that. The same thing applies with your religious practices. The majority can't tell you to quit going to this church or to church on that day. Gun rights are clear too, but the left wants you to think it isn't. But I am for limiting gun rights, but only through a Constitutional Amendment. That is how the Constitution is supposed to work.
