Fighting Tigers comes from the 141 F.A. from the Civil war. The Louisiana Brigade who's motto was "TRY US" Nothing generic about that.

Most of these mentioned in the thread aren't even nicknames? They're just the athletic team names.
Nicknames would be like "Bayou Bengals". Or like in UVA's case, "Wahoos" instead of the athletic team name "Cavaliers"
