If they do end up doing this, it's going to be so weird watching the first Pelicans vs Hornets game.
I know they had the name first, but "Hornets" were our first NBA team. I know there was a brand issue with the move, but the name still holds some history with this city and that won't change.

I also think it's stupid for a new team to assume an old name.
Kinda why I was never too upset about never getting Jazz back.
The "new" Charlotte Hornets have no connection to the former hornets franchise. Same with the future Seattle team if they decide to become the Sonics. The Sonics franchise is in OKC now.

It's a little different in that aspect. When the Sonics left, they made a deal with Seattle that the franchise records and history would stay in the city in case they were awarded another franchise. While all the Sonics players/personnel went to OKC, the Thunder were still considered an expansion team.
No such deal was made between the Hornets and Charlotte when they moved.

Question... Now that we will no longer be called the New Orleans Hornets, how would Charlotte get the name back?
I know that they can just buy the name from Benson, but can we make them trade a future first round pick (2013) and some cash for it? Would the name Hornets for MKG be a legal deal? How does this work?
