I've got a Browning Gold and I know a lot of people talk bad about them, but mine has never hiccupped at all. It will shoot the lightest dove load and the heaviest 3.5 inch load back-to-back with no problems and it is really really soft on the shoulder.
If you want to go soft on the shoulder and inexpensive, or relatively so, get on Gunbroker and find a nice twenty year old 3inch magnum Remington 1100.

I think one of the best guns for the money is the Beretta A390. Won't shoot a 3.5in but its a great gun.
Not sure is serious. I have one that I beat the ever live hell out of and it still works great. It will have a hiccup every now and then but not much, but soft on the shoulder it is not.
Compare the Gold any of the modern ones (Benelli SBE2, Super Vinci, Maxus, Extrema) and it's night and day.
The new ones are much lighter and much softer on the shoulder.
