Didn't used to. My dad played without a helmet in HS in the 1910s. Broken noses were common. Concussions were rare. The less protected you are, the fewer risks you take.

Where in the hell have you been? Football has always been a sport where bodily damage is done because. "Return to the art of tackling" where players weren't injured must be a ballet you dreamed up in your mind because it never existed in the game of football. There have always been injuries and lifetime damage to bodies from football. Hell, the NFL has instituted rules but players break them. They are called penalties. We have them in college football as well and players are supposed to be suspended from games but the SEC doesn't enforce such on Bama.

This is the surest fix...the helmets are false security...without them head first tackling and running is over.

But Steve young appeared/appears to be fine and the belief was he will lead a normal post football life...I'm sure football players were aware concussions could lead to retirement but not that it could lead to dementia and early onset Alzheimer's....why is the nfl only now changing the rules on tackling if they knew 10 yrs ago?
