| Best 1099 reporting software? (Posted on 1/22/13 at 10:34 am)
Anyone else dealing with the horror of 1099 reporting this January? I'm looking at a list of 1500+ vendors crossing multiple 1099 types. Our accounting software's 1099 function is clunky so I'm abandoning it in favor of good old-fashioned excel skills. All I need now is some off the shelf software that is straightforward and has the ability to import via excel. TIA

Try Quickbooks - cheap, easy to use, lots of support.

Quickbooks makes standalone 1099 software? Let me clarify, I'm not looking to implement new accounting software, just something to get these damn forms out.

Quickbooks does not make stand alone 1099 software - it is a full accounting suite.
I suggested it intending that the whole package not be installed/used. Just load it up and use the part that does 1099's.
If you want stand alone have a look at winfiler. It will be about the same price as QB and not as easy to use. Since you have a little more than a week to finish that should count for something!

LINK This software will import data from Excel, produce the Form 1099's from blank paper, doesn't cost that much, and you can download it and get started immediately.
I can't say I've ever used it, but I have used similar packages in the past, and they all have to pass IRS review prior to being released to the public.

Quickbooks works good for this if you create a dummy file. Figure out what each 1099 vendor is due, then create a dummy file with a category for each 1099 box. Write dummy checks to these vendors (showing a huge negative cash balance on the register) for the amount they were paid over the year and categorize them in the correctly maped 1099 box. Then print 1099s.

Thanks. I ended up going with this. So far so good.
Poodle, can you clarify exactly which forms have to be pre-printed? I was under the impression that only the IRS copy, but I see tons of 3-5 part pre-printed packages available through Office Depot, etc. Is that just for the suckers?

You can file the IRS copies of the 1099's and 1096 electronically, so you don't need any pre-printed forms really. Those packages of pre-preinted forms are useful for paople who have to generate just a few 1099's or W-2's and they do not have a program that will produce them on blank paper.

I thought that form 1096 was only necessary when filing paper returns with the IRS?

Isn't the 1096 just summary transmittal information? I always assumed when you file the 1099's electronically the 1096 information is transmitted in the background.
