re: Thoughts on getting a puppy (Updaqte page 5)

Thanks. I ended up getting the "how to raise the perfect dog from puppy to adult" just so I can understand them better. I figured it couldn't hurt even though I know a good bit already.

I don't have a fenced in yard but I will be taking him out every day to play, walk, fetch etc.

We decided to wait until the next litter just so we can relax for a bit. It's difficult to just go to Nola for a night when you have a dog so waiting is probably best. Not to mention all the other crap we have to do.

Sounds like a great decision. I applaud your effort to learn as much as you can before taking the leap!

Just hope the next litter isn't too far off or the wife wants to wait longer.

mine too

when i get my keys, he goes in the kennel

when i bring a plate of food from the kitchen into the living room to eat in front of the tv, he gets in his kennel

if i say his name in a certain tone(usually VERY cheerful), he gets in his kennel

and sometimes he just goes in there with a bone to hang out and chew

have you thought about rescuing a dog from a shelter?

imo that is the best thing you can do rather than buying one from a breeder

Go to shelter and get a dog .. Too many irresposbile people get puppy's and don't realize the "burden"

I have looked at the shelters but can't find what I am looking for. I want a shepherd and the wife wants a pretty dog. This way we both get what we want and I especially get my, loyal, intelligent, protective, badass companion I always wanted.

i hate to be THAT guy, but really, you should just be looking for a healthy dog that needs a home. go check out the shelters in person, play with a few dogs, and keep checking back with them weekly to see if any new ones have been brought

those guys NEED homes, otherwise they are just going to be put down eventually.

worrying about getting a certain breed or a "pretty dog", shouldnt be the way to go about it. imo of course

I have been checking frequently and they haven't had any that were worth it yet.

re: Thoughts on getting a puppy (Updaqte page 5)

It's not just based off looks but my wife didn't want the black and tan shepherd because they look intimidating and scare some people.

I want a dog that fits my personality, is smart as hell, loyal, protective, very trainable, protective, shadows me, good looking and will be an all around great family dog.

I want a german shepherd (as well as other dogs but a GSD the most). I have wanted one my whole life. If I found a puppy in a shelter I would get it but alas, I have not. The white fur just makes them even better and is icing on the cake.

I will only adopt a puppy because adult shelter dogs are so ingrained with bad habits and a 3rd 21st chromosome that I won't get one. If the puppies there meet the above criteria, I'll adopt all day.

If you want to be a tool or get a rise out of me, you are barking up the wrong tree. I don't care what other people think for the most part because I do my research and consider all possible options before I make a big decision.

Bye.

You pick other major life purchases on that same mantra?

Maybe I should go to the orphanage for kids (I actually plan to at least once.

And the the local femi-nazi, strip club, dating service or planned parenthood for a wife.

i think it goes deeper

too many people look at a pet as a status symbol, a commodity, or as an extension of themselves.

that shouldnt be the case.

I'm not some PETA freak or treehugger, but there is a serious dog overpopulation problem and dogs in shelters need homes.

If you want to adopt a dog, great. But you need to look at the reasons why you're doing it.

quote:

I will only adopt a puppy because adult shelter dogs are so ingrained with bad habits
also, this is incorrect

dude, it's a dog. not just a thing. it's a living, breathing creature that requires care and attention. not a flat screen TV for your living room

For real.

We're getting a puppy in March, and I'm going to Florida to get him. Made sure his health checked out, that it was a reputable breeder, and fit our lifestyle. Not just a good looking dog.

He will cry at all hours of the night, just like a baby, so be prepared for that.
And he will chew, rip, destroy many nice things in your home, at least until you train him.
He will also pee/poop numerous times in your house until you train him, so try to put nice rugs away and keep him off of carpeted areas of your home.
Save a life and get a dog from a shelter.
Good luck.
